Wir hefteten ihm einen Schweineschwanz aus Löschpapier
Hinten an sein Jacket, wenn er vorn an der Tafel stand
Vertieft in seinen "alten Menge", dies Latein-Brevier
Der Klasse seinen gramgebeugten Rücken zugewandt
Der kleine Doktor Brand war uns ganz einfach nicht gewachsen
Nicht unserem Spott, nicht unserer Bosheit und nicht unseren Faxen
Zwei Dutzend Pubertanten, die ihn feixend imitierten
Und wie zum Hohn im Chor mit ihm "amare" konjugierten:

"Amo, amas, amat, amamus, amatis, amant"
"Am Arsch" fügt ich hinzu, hinter der vorgehalt'nen Hand

Wir waren die Crème de la Crème der übelsten Gesellen
Er war so eine sanfte, verletzliche Kreatur
Ein wohlfeiles Opfer für uns, geübt im Fallenstellen
Der gutmütige, kleine Mann mit der Igelfrisur
Der uns noch nach der Schule half, wenn wir Nachhilfe brauchten
Uns nicht verpetzte, wenn wir auf der Schultoilette rauchten
Zum Dank hieß es "einer für alle, alle gegen einen"
Wir brachten den gestandenen Mann vor der Klasse zum Weinen

Als auf der Tafel stand, gekritzelt von Schülerhand:
"Ave Doktor Brand, dormituri te salutant!"
Ein stoppelhaariges Mondgesicht ergänzte noch unser Spottgedicht
"Wenn alles schläft, nur einer spricht, ist das Doktor Brands Unterricht!"

All das lag unter dem gnädigen Staub von 60 Jahren
Der stille Kauz und sein Latein sind längst Vergangenheit
Von einem seiner jüngeren Schüler hab ich erst erfahren
Dass er den rosa Winkel trug an seinem Häftlingskleid
Als sie von Sachsenhausen zum Belower Wald marschierten
Geschunden, ausgehungert fanden ihn die Alliierten
Mai '45, stumm, verstört und nur noch Haut und Knochen
Die Würde aber unberührt, sein Wille ungebrochen
So gibt er mir noch eine Lektion, die ich nicht vergesse
Im "AcI": "Memento discipuli, errare humanum esse!"
Wie wünschte ich heute, dass ich Worte der Versöhnung fände
Es tut mir so leid, ich bin mit meinem Latein am Ende

"Scio quod nescio, da mihi veniam, Doktor Brand!"

We pinned a pig's tail made of blotting paper
To the back of his jacket, up at the blackboard
Immersed in his "old Menge", this Latin primer
Hunching his careworn back, facing the class
Little Doctor Brand was simply no match for us
Not for our mockery, our cruelty, or our pranks
Two dozen pubescent boys, mocking him with glee
And, as if to spite him, conjugating "amare" in chorus:

"Amo, amas, amat, amamus, amatis, amant"
"Up his behind" I added, behind my raised hand

We were the crème de la crème of the most wicked rogues
He was such a gentle, vulnerable creature
An easy target for us, skilled in setting traps
The good-natured little man with the hedgehog hairstyle
Who helped us after school, when we needed tutoring
Who did not tell on us, when we smoked in the school toilet
In return, it was "one for all, all against one"
We brought the mature man to tears in front of the class

As scrawled on the blackboard by a student's hand:
"Ave Doktor Brand, dormituri te salutant!"
A stubbly round moon face complemented our mocking poem
"When everyone is asleep, only one is talking, that's Doktor Brand's class!"

All of that lay under the merciful dust of 60 years
The quiet fellow and his Latin are long gone
From one of his younger students I only learned
That he wore the pink triangle on his prisoner's uniform
When they marched from Sachsenhausen to Belower Wald
Tortured, starved, the Allies found him
May '45, mute, disoriented, nothing but skin and bones
But his dignity remained untouched, his will unbroken
And so he taught me a lesson I will never forget
In the "AcI": "Memento discipuli, errare humanum esse!"
How I wish I could find words of reconciliation today
I am so sorry, I am at my wit's end with my Latin
