It's raining cats and dogs,
as they say,
weather where you wouldn't put a dog outside.
And now this man with a walker stands in front of the house
and knocks on the garden gate with his aged hand.
He's a bit spooky with his slippers and thin crocheted jacket.
He says he lives here and wants to come in now.
And what I'm doing here, he can't be quite right in the head.
And slowly it becomes clear to me, the old fellow behind the fence
has escaped from the caregivers at the Waldesruh home.
And now I have a slightly confused, hypothermic grandpa on my hands.
My wife watches from the front door and immediately
brings him a juice box, because each of us knows
old people don't drink enough, and gives him a butter cookie
from her purse, the classic for on the go.
And around his shoulders, she lays my beloved cuddle blanket.

But it's getting dark and something needs to happen soon.
Somehow I have to get the escapee back to the home.
But how do you handle such an unwieldy man?
Just as I realize I can't do this alone,
Mr. Fellmann comes around the corner
with his dog Bonsai from their walk.
And so we shoulder the old man together,

Mr. Fellmann is a God-fearing, well-trained man.
He works as a bouncer at Berghain, and you can tell.
Haircut like Bert & Ernie,

tattooed on the back of his neck.
He knows his way around the bulky, the resistant, the uncooperative.

Bonsai is a pitbull and has teeth like a shark.
A soul of a dog, a very, very sweet Bonsai.
Instead of a leash, he walks very well on a Kevlar harness,
and that's now strapped to the front of the walker.

The dog pulls, the owner supports, and I push our slightly
demented client to the Waldesruh home, very, very carefully.

Barely 300 meters, but we're making slow progress.
The problem bear talks a lot and stops often.
He tells us how he blew up the bridge at the Quai with Winnetou
and whistles the corresponding march.
And with the air flow of the notes,
his dentures also escape.
I pick them up.
Mr. Fellmann puts them, unfazed, into the bag
that Bonsai carries his business in.
And on goes our wobbly procession.
At the corner, I can already see the green neon sign,
Haus Waldesruh.

So we stand at the door, feeling quite solemn,

It smells of kitchen, disinfectant, and a bit of pee.
Sister Stefanie welcomes us with a fruit juice spritzer.
"On the late shift, we're only four sisters for the whole house.
Staff shortage, so sometimes someone escapes.
My goodness, Grandpa Böllke, what are you doing?"
Mr. Böllke beams, "It's bright and warm here."
And there comes Mrs. von Kleist with her doll in her arms.
They hand out the supper with liverwurst and herbal tea.
On TV there's a film with Conny and Peter Kraus.
So everyone has something to eat and almost everyone has something to laugh about.
We better take our leave now, just in case.

As we say goodbye, Mr. Bölke laughs in my face,
"Go away, young man, I don't know you!"
And pats Bonsai tenderly, "Oh, he's mean.
Well, we'll all see each other again soon in paradise."
Through the glass door, I see him raise his hand to the sky like a prophet.
We trudge home with a gentle smile: man, dog, man.
Good to know that we can count on each other.
Good to know, on such a rainy night,
when a good neighbor is watching around the corner,
even the most confused can live in peace.
We shake hands and paws in good neighborly fashion.
