It's raining cats and dogs,
As the saying goes,
Weather you wouldn't send a dog out in.
And now this man with a walker stands in front of the house,
Knocking on the garden gate with his old hand.
He looks a bit spooky with his slippers and thin crochet jacket.
He says he lives here and wants to come in.
And what I'm doing here, he can't be quite right.
Slowly it dawns on me, the old fellow behind the fence
Has escaped from the caregivers at the Waldesruh home.
And now I have a slightly confused, hypothermic grandpa on my hands.
My wife watches from the front door, and immediately
Brings him a juice box, because we all know
Old people don't drink enough, and gives him a butter cookie
From her purse, the classic for on the go.
And she drapes my beloved cuddle blanket around his shoulders.

But it's getting dark and something needs to happen soon.
Somehow I have to get the escapee back to the home.
But how do you handle such an unwieldy man?
Just as I realize I can't do this alone,
Mr. Fellmann comes around the corner with his dog Bonsai from their walk.
And so we shoulder the old man together,
Mr. Fellmann, Bonsai and I. Mr. Fellmann, Bonsai and I. (Simultaneously)

Mr. Fellmann is a God-fearing, well-trained man.
He works as a bouncer at Berghain, and you can tell.
Haircut like Bert & Ernie, shaved on the sides, "Elvis lives" and "Mom of my heart"
Tattooed on his neck.
He knows how to deal with the bulky, the resistant, the uncooperative.

Bonsai is a little dog (?) with teeth like a shark,
A soul of a dog, a very, very sweet Bonsai.
Instead of a leash, he walks well-behaved on a Kevlar harness,
And it is now strapped to the front of the walker.

The dog pulls, the owner supports, and I push our slightly
Demented client to the Waldesruh home, very, very carefully.

Just under 300 meters, but we're only making slow progress.
The problem bear talks a lot and stops often.
He tells us how he blew up the bridge on the Quai with Winnetou

I pick them up, Mr. Fellmann puts them, unperturbed, into the bag
That carries Bonsai's business, and our wobbly procession continues.
Up ahead at the corner, I can already see the green neon sign.
The Waldesruh home is in sight, tears of joy well up in the eyes of our foundling.

And so we stand at the door, feeling quite solemn.

It smells like kitchen, disinfectant, and a bit of pee.
Sister Stefanie welcomes us with a push of juice.
"On the late shift, we're only four sisters for the whole house,
Staff shortages, so sometimes one of them escapes.
My goodness, Grandpa Böllke, what are you doing?"
Mr. Böllke beams, "It's bright and warm here."

And then Mrs. von Kleist comes with her doll in her arms.
They hand out sandwiches with liverwurst and herbal tea.
A movie with Conny and Peter Kraus is playing on TV.
So everyone has something to eat and almost everyone has something to laugh about.
We'd better take our leave as a precaution.

As a farewell, Mr. Bölke laughs in my face,
"Go away, young man, I don't know you!"
And pats Bonsai tenderly, "Oh, he's nasty.
Well, we'll all see each other again soon in paradise."
Through the glass door, I see him raise his hand to the sky like a prophet.
We trudge home with a gentle smile: man, dog, man.
Good to know that you can count on each other.
Good to know, on such a rainy night:
When a good neighbor is watching around the corner,
Even the most confused can live in peace.
