Well I was up on Stony Ridge after this chestnut mare
I'd been chasin' her for weeks
Oh, I'd catch a glimpse of her every once in a while
Takin' her meal, or bathin
A fine lady

This one day I happened to be real close to her
I saw her standin' over there
So I snuck up to her nice and easy
And I got my rope out
And I flung it in the air

Well I got her, and I'm pullin' on her, she's pullin' back
Like a mule goin' up a ladder
I take this chance and I jump up on her
Damned if I don't land right on top of her
Well she takes off, runnin' up on to that ridge
Higher than I've ever been before
She's runnin' along just fine, till she stops
Something spooked her
It's a sidewinder, all coiled and ready to strike
She doesn't know what to do for a second
But then she jumps off the edge

Above the clouds
Higher than eagles were gliding
Suspended in the sky
Over the moon
Straight for the sun we were riding
My eyes were filled with light
Behind us black walls
Below us a canyon
Floating with no sound
Gulls far below
Seemed to be suddenly rising
Exploding all around

And we were falling down this crevice, about a mile down
I'd say! I look down and I see this red thing below us
It's our reflection in a little pool of water
About six feet wide, and one foot deep
And we're comin' up real fast
Crawling down right through it
We hit and we splashed it dry
That's when I lost my hold and she got away
But I'm gonna' try to get her again some day

Toujours seule, jamais avec un troupeau
La plus belle jument que j'aie jamais vue
Tu devras me croire sur parole

Je vais attraper cette jument si je peux
Et quand je l'aurai, je lui donnerai mon fer
J'étais sur Stony Ridge à la poursuite de cette jument châtain
Je la chassais depuis des semaines
Oh, je la voyais par moments
Manger ou prendre son bain
Une belle dame

Un jour, je me suis retrouvé très près d'elle
Je l'ai vue debout là-bas
Alors je me suis approché d'elle, lentement
Et j'ai sorti ma corde
Et je l'ai lancée en l'air

Et quand je l'aurai, je lui donnerai mon fer

Je l'ai attrapée, et je tire sur elle, elle tire en arrière
Comme un mulet qui monte une échelle
J'en profite et je saute sur elle
Bon sang, j'atterris juste sur son dos
Elle se met à courir, elle monte sur la crête
Plus haut que je n'aie jamais été auparavant
Elle court bien, jusqu'à ce qu'elle s'arrête
Quelque chose l'a effrayée
C'est un serpent à sonnettes, tout enroulé, prêt à frapper
Elle ne sait pas quoi faire pendant une seconde
Mais ensuite, elle saute du bord
Moi, je m'accroche

Au-dessus des nuages
Plus haut que les aigles qui planent
Suspendus dans le ciel
Au-dessus de la lune
Tout droit vers le soleil, nous galopons
Mes yeux étaient remplis de lumière
Derrière nous, des murs noirs
En dessous, un canyon
Flottant sans aucun son
Des goélands bien en dessous
Semblaient soudainement monter
Explosant tout autour

Je vais attraper cette jument si je peux

Et nous tombons dans cette crevasse, à environ un kilomètre de profondeur
Je dirais ! Je regarde en bas et je vois cette chose rouge en dessous de nous
C'est notre reflet dans une petite flaque d'eau
D'environ deux mètres de large et 30 centimètres de profondeur
Et nous arrivons très vite
Nous rampons à travers
Nous frappons et nous éclaboussons l'eau
C'est à ce moment-là que j'ai perdu mon étreinte et elle s'est enfuie
Mais je vais essayer de l'attraper à nouveau un jour
