Es war im letzten Jahr zur Weihnachtszeit,
Wir machten unser Zimmer für das Fest bereit. Da stand der Tannenbaum noch frisch und grün, und unsre Augen waren nur noch da für ihn.
Er war noch ungeschmückt
Und doch so schön,
Wir konnten alle Weihnachsträume in ihm sehn.
Doch das, was dann geschah, das war das allergrößte Ding: Unser Kleinster rief:
Da sitzt ein Schmetterling.

Für einen kurzen Augenblick.

War unser schönster Weihnachtstraum, wir fühlten, dass es einen gibt,
Der auch das allerkleinste Leben liebt.
Wir saßen alle da im Lampenlicht, Weihnachtskerzen gab's in unserm Bäumchen nicht, denn unser kleiner Freund war dort zu Haus
Und flog in seinen grünen Zweigen ein und aus.
Dann kam die stille Zeit der heil'gen Nacht.
Wir haben sie noch nie so unbeschwert verbracht.
Und nach dem Weihnachtsfest hat er sich irgendwo versteckt, wir haben ihn bis heute nicht entdeckt.
