Now, this is how things stood
The cat was up a tree, sitting on one branch
The bird up the same tree, on another branch
But not too close to the cat, there
Was no great affection between them
The wolf walked round and round the tree
Staring at the both of them with greedy eyes
He was licking his hungry chops
Peter saw it all, thinking, "So the wolf wants one of them?
Well, two can play this game, I'll trap him

So Peter went to his room and found a strong rope, which
He worked round and round smoothly, until he made a noose
He slipped it through his fingers and tried one or two quick throws
He went out and noiselessly climbed up the stone wall
Over which one of the branches of the tree stretched
Silently he took hold of the branch and eased himself onto the tree
He whispered to the bird, "Be a good little bird
Fly down and tease the wolf a bit, not too close
Just enough to keep him busy for a moment or two"
The bird obeyed and fluttered overhead, almost touching the wolf
The wolf ducked and struck upwards and
Sideways, snapping his huge, sharp teeth
But she was a clever little bird and the wolf couldn't catch her

"Stop shooting!" Peter shouted, but the hunters couldn't hear him
Again he shouted, "Stop, put your guns away, Birdy
And I have caught your wolf, now take him to a zoo"

So standen also die Dinge
Die Katze oben im Baum saß auf einem Ast
Der Vogel ebenda auf einem anderen Zweig
Doch nicht zu nah zur Katze hin
Gering war ihre Zuneigung zueinander
Der Wolf lief rund um den Baum
Starrte sie beide an mit gier'gen Blicken
Leckte sich die hungernden Lefzen
Petja sah es und dachte: "Also will der Wolf von den beiden?
Gut, zwei spielen mit, ich werd' ihn fangen
Ja, so muss man's machen, ja so wird's gemacht!"
Peter ging ins Haus und holte ein starkes Seil
Schlang es geschickt, bis eine Schlinge entstand
Er ließ es durch die Finger gleiten, probierte schnell
Schlich raus und kletterte lautlos die Steinmauer hoch
Über die ein Ast des Baumes ragte
Leise griff er den Ast, schwang sich hinauf
Er flüsterte dem Vogel: "Sei ein kluges Vögelchen
Flieg runter und neck den Wolf, nur nicht zu nah
Lenk ihn ab für einen Augenblick"
Der Vogel folgte, flatterte knapp über dem Wolf
Der Wolf duckte sich, schlug aus nach oben
Und zur Seite, fletschend seine scharfen Zähne
Doch sie war klug, der Wolf erhaschte sie nicht
Währenddessen hielt Peter das Seil fest und ohne
Wolf's Wissen schob er die Schlinge sanft über seinen Schweif
Er zog mit ganzer Kraft - hoppla, der Wolf war gefangen!
Am Schwanz gepackt sprang er wild, wollte entkommen
Peter band das Seil am Baum fest
Je stärker der Wolf kämpfte, umso fester zog die Schlinge
Da sah Peter die Jäger kommen
Schritten aus dem Wald auf ihn zu
Ihre Doppelflinten blitzten in der Sonne
Scharf und bereit
"Hört auf!" rief Peter, doch niemand hörte ihn
Er schrie: "Stoppt, steckt die Gewehre weg, Vögelein
Und ich fing euren Wolf, bringt ihn jetzt in den Zoo"
