Peter and the Wolf, Op. 67: IV. "Now This Is How Things Stood"

Now, this is how things stood
The cat was up a tree, sitting on one branch
The bird up the same tree, on another branch
But not too close to the cat, there
Was no great affection between them
The wolf walked round and round the tree
Staring at the both of them with greedy eyes
He was licking his hungry chops
Peter saw it all, thinking, "So the wolf wants one of them?

So Peter went to his room and found a strong rope, which

He slipped it through his fingers and tried one or two quick throws

He whispered to the bird, "Be a good little bird

Петя зашёл в комнату, нашёл крепкую верёвку
И ловко закрутил её, сделав петлю.
Он проверил её, сделав пару быстрых взмахов,
Вышел и бесшумно забрался на каменную стену,
Над которой тянулась одна из ветвей дерева.
Тихо ухватившись за ветку, он перебрался на дерево
И прошептал птице: «Будь умницей,
Слетай вниз, подразни волка, но не слишком близко,
Просто чтобы отвлечь его на минутку».
Птица послушалась и запорхала над волком, почти касаясь его,
Волк нырнул, рванулся вверх и
В сторону, щёлкая огромными острыми зубами,
Но птичка была хитрой, и волк не мог её поймать.
