Kulkuri ja joutsen

Oon kulkuriksi syntynyt mä vainen
Ja paljain jaloin kierrän maailmaa.
Näin kerran unta: joutsen taivahainen
Mun antoi hetken kanssaan taivaltaa.
Näin maat ja metsät, järvet maani armaan,
Sen kaiken sinitaivahalta näin.
Tuuli lauloi laulujaan,
Sadun hohde peitti maan,
Ihanampaa en mä koskaan nähdä saata.

Ja laulun tämän lauloi mulle tuuli:
"On kaikkein kaunein aina oma maa,
Niin moni muuta paremmaksi luuli,
Mut pettymyksen itsellensä saa.
Ei missään taivas sinisemmin loista,
Ei missään hanki hohda kirkkaammin.
Tämä paina sydämees,
Niin on taivas aina sees,
Ja sun taipaleeltas murhe kauas kaikkoo."

Niin päättyi uni, mutta vielä vuotan
Mä kohtaavani kerran joutsenen,

The Wanderer and the Swan

As a vagabond born, I roam
Barefoot around the world.
Once I dreamed: A swan from heaven
Let me journey with her for a while.
I saw my country's forests, lakes
And from the blue sky above.
The wind sang her songs,
A fairy tale's glow covered the earth,
No more beautiful sight I'll see.

And the wind sang this song to me:
"The most beautiful is always one's own country,
So many thought otherwise,
But they were disappointed.
Nowhere does the sky shine bluer,
Nowhere does the snow gleam brighter.
Take this to your heart,
Then heaven is always within,
And all worries will vanish from your path."

Thus the dream ended, but I still yearn
To meet the swan again,
And until then I trust in my dreams;
It's easy for a mortal to dream.
So barefoot I seek my fortune,
And banish worries with my song.
Life is wonderful,
When you really get it
And fly with the whitest of wings, like a swan.
