Last year you hung up The Streets moniker,
Why did you decide to start making music again?
Mike Skinner (
The Streets): I never didn't want to do music and I certainly wanted
To make a big change,
But it's only really become clear now what it is that I wanted.
I wanted to not do The Streets and to be more of a producer really.
So, literally as soon as The Streets deal ended,
I was doing the soundtrack to The Inbetweeners.
It was really fun and kind of what I'd
Always dreamed of doing when I was a kid.
So, The D.
O.
T is really an extension of that.
Noisey: Yeah,
It's quite a departure from the sound
Of The Streets, was that intentional?
Mike Skinner: There's people that really like The
Streets and it wouldn't be right to go far off that.
If I did a Streets album without any of my vocals on it people
Would be like "what the hell's that?" - but that's what I want to do.
I want to concentrate on the production.
My sort of production is obviously influenced a lot by rap and grime.
But no one has really put a voice like Rob's on those tracks.
It's exciting, there's people that really love it and really
Hate it, which believe it or not is what happened with The Streets.
Noisey: Oh really?
I love Original Pirate Material! {
First Album}
Mike Skinner:
A lot less people now say that
Original Pirate Material was a load of shit.
It makes sense because it's been 10 years, people have got used to it.
I don't know whether anyone is going to like The D.
O.
T, but I do know is that it hasn't really been done before.
Noisey: Also, I follow your Twitter account
And it went quiet for a while, which was sad...
Mike Skinner: Yeah, and it'll be quiet again, y'know.
It's not really normal having 200,000 people following your words.
It's not how humans evolved, so it's weird.
I've never wanted to get on peoples nerves.
Noisey: Good point.
So, wow did the link up with Danny Brown come about?
Mike Skinner: He's really into UK stuff and into what I was doing.
So, when I went to see him at XOYO a couple of months ago we had
A party and went off to Paris the next day with a really sore head.
That's when I started to email him.
I sent him a track and he sent me a vocal back.
Noisey: So, it was all over email?
Mike Skinner: Yeah, and then we decided we needed to make a video.
He was like, "
I'm gonna be in Prague in a week and then
I'm not coming back to Europe for a while".
We were like, "
Wow, okay" and flew out there.
I hate it when you get those videos where there's a guy rapping on
It, but he wasn't there so you see him on a TV screen or something.
It was really important to us that it didn't feel like one of those.
Noisey: Would you say the track is
Representative of the album as a whole?
Mike Skinner: No, this record, and that,
Is mainly stuff that's already been on Soundcloud.
This first album is kind of like a Soundcloud greatest hits.
Then, there's going to be another album which is
All new stuff and that's coming February next year.
Noisey: What do you think about
Soundcloud and the way the industry is going?
Mike Skinner: I spend a lot of my life on Soundcloud.
It's really interesting.
I speak to Diplo sometimes and Mad Decent
And they're basically like an events company.
They don't sell their music, it just goes out there.
In the old days a label would release something
Every month but Mad Decent do something almost every day.
They do the Block Party things and all the
Events, and Diplo is out there making gazillions DJing.
I think the dance people know what they're
Doing and all they're trying to do is get DJing work.
The economics of the music is irrelevant, it's like,
Get the music out there,
Get people listening to it, and get people coming to see you.
Noisey: Yeah, I mean Skrillex is earning millions from DJing...
Mike Skinner: The whole EDM thing is kind of the model.
But for us,
We're sort of half a traditional band and half a dance thing.
Rob plays the guitar and I play the
Keyboards, but it's very electronic as well.
Noisey: Deadmau5 was saying he just puts his
Laptop in and presses play, but you're playing stuff too?
Mike Skinner: That whole EDM thing,
When it's in the correct environment,
Like the Electric Daisy festival in America or whatever, it works.
But it's when you get, say,
A DJ on a stage at Glastonbury it can be a bit
Confusing for the traditional rock'n'roll punters.
Noisey: True it is a bit weird.
So, what are your shows going to be like?
Mike Skinner: The gigs on this tour are going to be tiny.
We probably won't even fill them,
But y'know, it feels like the old days.
The people that do like The D.
O.
T - and you can probably count them
On two hands - they really do like it.
The lesson for the modern world really is to ignore
The mass media and give the audience what they want.
Noisey: Brave move.
Finally, what have you been listening to lately?
Mike Skinner: I've been listening to trap.
It's weird, it started about three months ago
And already it's starting to feel quite saturated.
Before that I was mad into moombahton and I've
Kind of got these ideas about really slow house.
It's kind of like a chopped and screwed nu-disco
Which is the sour house thing that I keep banging on about.
Every few months there's some new idea or something.
Disclosure are also fantastic,
And all that half time drum & bass shit about like "
Under Yuh Skirt" by Mavado,
Which I think is a Zeds Dead tune, weirdly.
That's the prototype for me really,
Taking what dubstep did and applying it to drum & bass.

Letztes Jahr hast du den Namen The Streets an den Nagel gehängt,
warum hast du dich entschieden, wieder Musik zu machen?
Mike Skinner (
The Streets): Ich wollte nie keine Musik machen und ich wollte auf jeden Fall
eine große Veränderung vornehmen,
aber es ist erst jetzt wirklich klar geworden, was ich wollte.
Ich wollte The Streets nicht mehr machen und eher ein Produzent sein.
Also, buchstäblich sobald der Deal mit The Streets beendet war,
habe ich den Soundtrack zu The Inbetweeners gemacht.
Es hat wirklich Spaß gemacht und war irgendwie das, wovon ich
als Kind immer geträumt habe.

T ist wirklich eine Erweiterung davon.
Noisey: Ja,
es ist eine ziemliche Abkehr vom Sound
von The Streets, war das beabsichtigt?
Mike Skinner: Es gibt Leute, die The Streets wirklich mögen, und es wäre nicht richtig, sich weit davon zu entfernen.

Meine Art der Produktion ist natürlich stark von Rap und Grime beeinflusst.
Aber niemand hat wirklich eine Stimme wie die von Rob auf diese Tracks gelegt.
Es ist aufregend, es gibt Leute, die es wirklich lieben und wirklich
hassen, was, ob du es glaubst oder nicht, auch bei The Streets der Fall war.
Noisey: Oh wirklich?
Ich liebe Original Pirate Material! {
Erstes Album}
Mike Skinner:
Viel weniger Leute sagen jetzt, dass
Original Pirate Material ein Haufen Scheiße war.
Es macht Sinn, weil es 10 Jahre her ist, die Leute haben sich daran gewöhnt.
Ich weiß nicht, ob jemand The D.
O.
T mögen wird, aber ich weiß, dass es so etwas noch nicht wirklich gegeben hat.
Noisey: Außerdem folge ich deinem Twitter-Account
und er war eine Weile still, was traurig war...
Mike Skinner: Ja, und er wird wieder still sein, weißt du.
Es ist nicht wirklich normal, dass 200.000 Leute deinen Worten folgen.
So haben sich Menschen nicht entwickelt, also ist es seltsam.
Ich wollte den Leuten nie auf die Nerven gehen.
Noisey: Guter Punkt.
Also, wie kam die Zusammenarbeit mit Danny Brown zustande?
Mike Skinner: Er steht total auf UK-Sachen und auf das, was ich gemacht habe.
Also, als ich ihn vor ein paar Monaten bei XOYO gesehen habe, hatten wir
eine Party und sind am nächsten Tag mit einem wirklich schweren Kopf nach Paris gefahren.
Da habe ich angefangen, ihm zu mailen.
Ich habe ihm einen Track geschickt und er hat mir einen Gesang zurückgeschickt.
Noisey: Also, es war alles per E-Mail?
Mike Skinner: Ja, und dann haben wir beschlossen, dass wir ein Video machen müssen.
Er sagte: "
Ich bin in einer Woche in Prag und dann
komme ich eine Weile nicht nach Europa zurück".
Wir sagten: "
Wow, okay" und flogen dorthin.
Ich hasse es, wenn man diese Videos bekommt, in denen ein Typ rappt,
aber er war nicht da, also sieht man ihn auf einem Fernsehbildschirm oder so.
Es war uns wirklich wichtig, dass es sich nicht wie eines davon anfühlt.
Noisey: Würdest du sagen, der Track ist
repräsentativ für das gesamte Album?
Mike Skinner: Nein, diese Platte, und jene,
besteht hauptsächlich aus Sachen, die bereits auf Soundcloud waren.
Dieses erste Album ist so etwas wie ein Soundcloud Greatest Hits.
Dann wird es ein weiteres Album geben, das
nur neue Sachen enthält, und das kommt im Februar nächsten Jahres.
Noisey: Was hältst du von
Soundcloud und der Entwicklung der Branche?
Mike Skinner: Ich verbringe einen Großteil meines Lebens auf Soundcloud.
Es ist wirklich interessant.
Ich spreche manchmal mit Diplo und Mad Decent
und sie sind im Grunde wie eine Event-Firma.
Sie verkaufen ihre Musik nicht, sie geht einfach raus.
Früher hat ein Label jeden Monat etwas veröffentlicht,
aber Mad Decent macht fast jeden Tag etwas.
Sie machen die Block Party-Sachen und all die
Events, und Diplo ist da draußen und verdient Millionen als DJ.
Ich denke, die Dance-Leute wissen, was sie tun,
und alles, was sie versuchen, ist, DJ-Jobs zu bekommen.
Die Wirtschaftlichkeit der Musik ist irrelevant, es ist wie,
bring die Musik raus,
bring die Leute dazu, sie zu hören, und bring die Leute dazu, dich zu sehen.
Noisey: Ja, ich meine, Skrillex verdient Millionen mit DJing...
Mike Skinner: Das ganze EDM-Ding ist irgendwie das Modell.
Aber für uns,
wir sind so halb eine traditionelle Band und halb ein Dance-Ding.
Rob spielt Gitarre und ich spiele
Keyboards, aber es ist auch sehr elektronisch.
Noisey: Deadmau5 sagte, er steckt einfach seinen
Laptop rein und drückt auf Play, aber du spielst auch Sachen?
Mike Skinner: Dieses ganze EDM-Ding,
wenn es in der richtigen Umgebung ist,
wie das Electric Daisy Festival in Amerika oder so, funktioniert es.
Aber wenn du, sagen wir,
einen DJ auf einer Bühne in Glastonbury hast, kann das ein bisschen
verwirrend für die traditionellen Rock'n'Roll-Fans sein.
Noisey: Stimmt, es ist ein bisschen seltsam.
Also, wie werden deine Shows sein?
Mike Skinner: Die Gigs auf dieser Tour werden winzig sein.
Wir werden sie wahrscheinlich nicht einmal füllen,
aber weißt du, es fühlt sich an wie in alten Zeiten.

an zwei Händen abzählen - mögen es wirklich.
Die Lektion für die moderne Welt ist wirklich,
die Massenmedien zu ignorieren und dem Publikum das zu geben, was es will.
Noisey: Mutiger Schritt.
Zum Schluss, was hast du in letzter Zeit gehört?
Mike Skinner: Ich habe Trap gehört.
Es ist seltsam, es hat vor etwa drei Monaten angefangen
und fühlt sich jetzt schon ziemlich gesättigt an.
Davor war ich verrückt nach Moombahton und ich habe
irgendwie diese Ideen über wirklich langsamen House.
Es ist so eine Art gehackter und geschraubter Nu-Disco,
was das Sour-House-Ding ist, über das ich immer wieder rede.
Alle paar Monate gibt es eine neue Idee oder so.
Disclosure sind auch fantastisch,
und all dieser Half-Time-Drum-&-Bass-Scheiß, wie "
Under Yuh Skirt" von Mavado,
was ich seltsamerweise für einen Zeds Dead-Tune halte.
Das ist für mich wirklich der Prototyp,
das zu nehmen, was Dubstep gemacht hat, und es auf Drum & Bass anzuwenden.
