Waldo Jeffers had reached his limit
It was now mid-August
Which meant he had been separated from Marsha for more than two months

He judged that with a minimum of jostling he could ride quite comfortably
A few air holes, some water, and perhaps some midnight snacks
And it would probably be as good as going tourist

By Friday afternoon, Waldo was set
He was thoroughly packed and the Post Office had agreed to pick him up at three o'clock
He'd marked the package "Fragile"
And as he sat curled up inside, resting on the foam rubber cushioning he'd thoughtfully included
He tried to picture the look of awe and happiness on Marsha's face
As she opened her door, saw the package, tipped the deliverer
And then opened it to see her Waldo finally there in person
She would kiss him, and then maybe they could see a movie
If he'd only thought of this before
Suddenly, rough hands gripped his package, and he felt himself borne up
He landed with a thud in a truck and was off

Marsha Bronson had just finished setting her hair
It had been a very rough weekend
She had to remember not to drink like that
Bill had been nice about it though
After it was over, he'd said he still respected her
And after all, it was certainly the way of nature
And even though, no, he didn't love her
He did feel an affection for her
And after all, they were grown adults
Oh, what Bill could teach Waldo
But that seemed many years ago

Sheila Klein, her very, very best friend, walked in through the porch screen door and into the kitchen
"Oh, gawd, it's absolutely maudlin outside"

Sheila ran her finger over some salt grains on the kitchen table, licked her finger and made a face

Marsha started to pat herself under the chin, an exercise she'd seen on television
"God, don't even talk about that"
She got up from the table and went to the sink where she picked up a bottle of pink and blue vitamins
"Want one? Supposed to be better than steak"
And then attempted to touch her knees
"I don't think I'll ever touch a daiquiri again"

She gave up and sat down, this time nearer the small table that supported the telephone
"Maybe Bill'll call" she said to Sheila's glance
Sheila nibbled on a cuticle
"After last night, I thought maybe you'd be through with him"
"I know what you mean
My God, he was like an octopus
Hands all over the place"
She gestured, raising her arms upwards in defense
"The thing is, after a while, you get tired of fighting with him, you know
And after all I didn't really do anything Friday and Saturday so I kind of owed it to him

"That schmuck!" said Sheila
Waldo trembled with expectation
"Well, you might as well open it," said Sheila
Both of them tried to lift the staple flap
"Ah sst," said Marsha, groaning, "he must have nailed it shut"
They tugged on the flap again
"My God! You need a power drill to get this thing open!"
They pulled again
"You can't get a grip"
They both stood still, breathing heavily

"Why don't you get a scissor?" said Sheila
Marsha ran into the kitchen
But all she could find was a little sewing scissor
Then she remembered that her father kept a collection of tools in the basement
She ran downstairs, and when she came back up, she had a large sheet metal cutter in her hand
"This is the best I could find"
She was very out of breath
"Here, you do it
I am gonna die"
She sank into a large fluffy couch and exhaled noisily
Sheila tried to make a slit between the masking tape and the end of the cardboard flap

L'idée lui vint le jeudi précédant le défilé des Mummers.

Il estima qu'avec un minimum de secousses, il pourrait voyager assez confortablement.
Quelques trous d'aération, de l'eau et peut-être quelques en-cas de minuit,
et ce serait probablement aussi bien que de voyager en touriste.

Vendredi après-midi, Waldo était prêt.
Il était soigneusement emballé et le bureau de poste avait accepté de venir le chercher à trois heures.
Il avait marqué le colis "Fragile".
Et alors qu'il était assis recroquevillé à l'intérieur, reposant sur le coussin en mousse qu'il avait judicieusement inclus,
il essayait d'imaginer l'expression d'admiration et de bonheur sur le visage de Marsha
lorsqu'elle ouvrirait sa porte, verrait le colis, donnerait un pourboire au livreur
et l'ouvrirait ensuite pour y découvrir son Waldo enfin là, en personne.
Elle l'embrasserait, et ensuite, peut-être, ils pourraient aller voir un film.
Si seulement il y avait pensé avant !
Soudain, des mains rugueuses saisirent son colis, et il se sentit soulevé.
Il atterrit avec un bruit sourd dans un camion et c'était parti.

Marsha Bronson venait de finir de se coiffer.

"Après hier soir, je pensais que tu en aurais fini avec lui."
"Je sais ce que tu veux dire.

Elle fit un geste, levant les bras en signe de défense.
"Le truc, c'est qu'après un moment, tu en as marre de te battre avec lui, tu vois.
Et après tout, je n'ai rien fait de spécial vendredi et samedi, alors je lui devais bien ça.
Tu vois ce que je veux dire ?"
Elle commença à se gratter.
Sheila rigolait en se couvrant la bouche de la main.

"Pourquoi tu ne regardes pas l'adresse de l'expéditeur pour voir de qui ça vient ?"
Waldo sentit son cœur battre.
Il pouvait sentir les vibrations des pas.
Ce serait bientôt.

Marsha fit le tour du carton et lut l'étiquette griffonnée à l'encre.
"Oh, mon Dieu ! C'est de Waldo !"
"Ce crétin !" dit Sheila.
Waldo tremblait d'impatience.
"Eh bien, tu peux aussi bien l'ouvrir", dit Sheila.
Toutes les deux essayèrent de soulever le rabat agrafé.
"Aïe !", dit Marsha en gémissant, "il a dû le clouer."
Elles tirèrent à nouveau sur le rabat.
"Mon Dieu ! Il faut une perceuse électrique pour ouvrir ce truc !"
Elles tirèrent encore.
"On n'arrive pas à le saisir."
Elles restèrent toutes les deux immobiles, respirant fortement.

"Pourquoi tu ne prends pas des ciseaux ?" dit Sheila.
Marsha courut dans la cuisine.
Mais tout ce qu'elle put trouver, ce fut un petit ciseau à couture.
Puis elle se souvint que son père gardait une collection d'outils au sous-sol.
Elle descendit en courant, et lorsqu'elle remonta, elle avait une grande cisaille à tôle à la main.
"C'est le mieux que j'ai pu trouver."
Elle était très essoufflée.

Je vais mourir."
Elle s'enfonça dans un grand canapé moelleux et expira bruyamment.
Sheila essaya de faire une fente entre le ruban adhésif et le bout du rabat en carton,
mais la lame était trop grande et il n'y avait pas assez de place.
"Zut alors !" dit-elle, se sentant très exaspérée.
Puis, souriant, "j'ai une idée."
"Quoi ?" dit Marsha.
"Regarde", dit Sheila en portant son doigt à sa tête.

À l'intérieur du colis, Waldo était tellement transporté d'excitation qu'il pouvait à peine respirer.
Sa peau le picotait à cause de la chaleur, et il sentait son cœur battre dans sa gorge.

Sheila se redressa et fit le tour du colis.
Puis elle s'agenouilla, saisit la cisaille à deux mains,
prit une grande inspiration et plongea la longue lame au milieu du colis,
à travers le ruban adhésif, à travers le carton, à travers le rembourrage
et en plein milieu de la tête de Waldo Jeffers, qui se fendit légèrement,
provoquant de petits arcs rythmiques de rouge qui pulsaient doucement dans le soleil du matin.
