Well, when I landed in Vietnam
I hardly got to see Saigon
They shaped us up and called the roll
and off we went on a long patrol
Swappin' lies, swattin' flies,
Firin' the odd shot here and there

The Captain called a halt that night
And we had chow by the pale moon light
A lovely dinner they'd planned for us
With a taste like a seat on a crosstown bus
Some of the veterans just left theirs layin' in the can
For the Viet Cong to find
Deadlier than a land mine
Hmmmm...

Naturally somebody told a joke
And a couple of the fellows began to smoke
I took a whiff as the a cloud rolled by
And my nose went up like an infield fly
The Captain, this blonde fellow from Yale looked at
me and said "What's a matter wit chu, baby?" (ghetto dialect)

Well I may be crazy, but I think not;
I swear to God that I smell pot!
But who'd have pot in Vietnam?
He said, "Whaddaya think you been sittin' on?"
These funny little plants...
Thousands of 'em.
Good God Almighty!
Pastures of plenty!

So we all lit up and by and by
The whole platoon was flyin' high
With a beautiful smile on the Captain's face
He smelled like midnight on St. Mark's Place
Cleanin' his weapon,
Chantin' sumpin' about Hari Krishna, Hari Krishna

The moment came,
As it comes to all
When I had to answer nature's call
I was stumbing around in a beautiful haze
When I met a little cat in black pj's
Rifle; ammo belt; BF Goodrich sandals
He looked up at me and said "What's a matter wit chu, baby?"
(sounding just like the Captain had)

He said we're campin' down the pass
And smelled you people blowin' grass
And since, by the smell, you're smoking trash
I brought you a taste of a special stash
Straight from Uncle Ho's victory garden
We call it Hanoi Gold.

So his squad and my squad settled down
Passin' lovely stuff around
All too soon it was time to go
The Captain got on the radio
Said "Hello headquarters?, Helloo, ahh, Headquarters?
We have met the enemy and he has been smashed!"

"Ahhh...
Lass uns das nochmal machen.
Glaubst du das?"

Nun, als ich in Vietnam landete,
habe ich Saigon kaum gesehen.
Sie haben uns aufgestellt und die Namen aufgerufen,
und wir gingen auf eine lange Patrouille,
tauschten Lügen aus, erschlugen Fliegen,
feuerten hier und da einen Schuss ab.

Der Captain rief in dieser Nacht zum Halt auf,
und wir hatten Essen im fahlen Mondlicht.
Ein herrliches Abendessen hatten sie für uns geplant,
mit einem Geschmack wie ein Sitz in einem Stadtbus.
Einige der Veteranen ließen ihres einfach in der Dose liegen,
damit der Vietcong es findet,
tödlicher als eine Landmine.
Hmmmm...

Natürlich erzählte jemand einen Witz,
und ein paar der Jungs fingen an zu rauchen.
Ich nahm einen Zug, als die Wolke vorbeizog,
und meine Nase ging hoch wie ein Infield-Fly.
Der Captain, dieser blonde Kerl aus Yale, sah mich an
und sagte: "Was ist los mit dir, Baby?" (Ghetto-Dialekt)

Nun, ich mag verrückt sein, aber ich glaube nicht;
Ich schwöre bei Gott, dass ich Gras rieche!
Aber wer hätte Pot in Vietnam?
Er sagte: "Was glaubst du, worauf du gesessen hast?"
Diese lustigen kleinen Pflanzen...
Tausende davon.
Gütiger Gott!
Weiden im Überfluss!

Also haben wir alle angezündet, und nach und nach
war der ganze Zug high.
Mit einem schönen Lächeln auf dem Gesicht des Captains,
er roch wie Mitternacht am St. Mark's Place.
Reinigte seine Waffe,
sang irgendetwas von Hari Krishna, Hari Krishna.

Der Moment kam,
wie er für alle kommt,
als ich dem Ruf der Natur folgen musste.
Ich stolperte in einem wunderschönen Dunst herum,
als ich einen kleinen Kerl in schwarzen Pyjamas traf.
Gewehr; Munitionsgürtel; BF Goodrich Sandalen.
Er sah zu mir auf und sagte: "Was ist los mit dir, Baby?"
(klang genau wie der Captain)

Er sagte, wir campen den Pass runter
und haben gerochen, wie ihr Leute Gras raucht,
und da ihr, dem Geruch nach, Müll raucht,
habe ich euch eine Kostprobe von einem speziellen Vorrat mitgebracht,
direkt aus Onkel Hos Siegesgarten.
Wir nennen es Hanoi Gold.

Also setzten sich seine und meine Truppe zusammen
und reichten schönes Zeug herum.
Viel zu schnell war es Zeit zu gehen.
Der Captain ging ans Funkgerät
und sagte: "Hallo Hauptquartier?, Hallo, äh, Hauptquartier?
Wir haben den Feind getroffen, und er wurde vernichtet!"
