Je suis un petit mendiant et je mendie depuis longtemps
Pendant plus de soixante ans sur cette petite île verdoyante
Je suis connu de la Liffey jusqu'à la Ségouine
Et je suis connu sous le nom de vieux Johnny Dhu
De tous les métiers qui existent, la mendicité est le meilleur
Car quand un homme est fatigué, il peut s'asseoir et se reposer
Il peut mendier son dîner, il n'a rien d'autre à faire
Que de se promener dans le coin avec son vieux rig-a-doo
J'ai dormi dans la grange, en bas à Caurabawn
Une nuit pluvieuse est arrivée et j'ai dormi jusqu'à l'aube
Avec des trous dans le toit et la pluie qui passait

Qui est-ce que j'ai réveillé si ce n'est la femme de la maison
