Lyrics and translation Uma Mohan - Shiva thaandava sthothram

Shiva thaandava sthothram
Hymn to Shiva's Cosmic Dance
Jatatavee gala jjala pravaha pavitha sthale
In the sacred space where the Ganges flows from matted locks,
Gale avalabhya lambithaam bhujanga thunga malikaam
With a raised serpent adorning the neck like a garland,
Dama ddama dama ddama ninnadava damarvayam
The damaru drum resonating "Dama ddama dama,"
Chakara chanda thandavam thanothu na shiva shivam
May Lord Shiva, performing the Tandava dance, protect us.
Jata kataha sambhramabrama nillimpa nirjari
With hair wildly flowing, adorned with the crescent moon,
Vilola veechi vallari viraja mana moordhani
And the Ganga cascading from the head,
Dhaga dhaga daga jjwala lalata patta pavake
With a blazing fire on the forehead,
Kishora Chandra shekare rathi prathi kshanam mama
May Lord Shiva, who wears the moon as a crest, always be with me.
Dara darendra nandini vilasa bhandhu bhandura
With the playful daughter of the mountain king on one side,
Sphuradigantha santhathi pramodha mana manase
And a radiant smile that brings joy to the mind,
Krupa kadaksha dhorani niruddha durdharapadi
With merciful glances that conquer even the most difficult obstacles,
Kwachi digambare mano vinodhamethu vasthuni
May the sky-clad Lord bring delight to my mind.
Jada bhujanga pingala sphurath phana mani prabha
With the brilliance of serpent jewels and a golden complexion,
Kadamba kumkuma drava praliptha digwadhu mukhe
And a face adorned with a paste of saffron and kadamba flowers,
Madhandha sindhura sphurathwagu utthariya medhure
Wearing a necklace of dazzling red sindoor,
Mano vinodhamadhbutham bibarthu bhootha bharthari
May the Lord of all beings bring joy to my mind.
Sahasra lochana prabhoothyasesha lekha shekhara
With countless eyes and a crest adorned with the moon,
Prasoona dhooli dhorani vidhu sarangri peedabhu
Covered in the dust of flowers and the brilliance of moonlight,
Bhujangaraja Malaya nibhadha jada jhootaka
With matted locks resembling a mountain abode of serpents,
Sriyai chiraya jayatham chakora bandhu shekhara
May the Lord with the moon as his crest be victorious forever.
Lalata chathwara jwaladhanam jaya sphulingabha
With a forehead adorned with the flame of victory,
Nipeetha pancha sayagam saman nilimpanayakam
And the five-headed serpent as a sacred thread,
Sudha mayookha lekhaya virajamana shekharam
With a crest adorned with the pure moon's glow,
Maha kapali sampade, siro jadalamasthu na
May the Lord of great skulls protect me.
Karala bhala pattika dhagadhaga jjwala
With a fearsome trident and a blazing flame,
Ddhanam jayahuthi krutha prachanda pancha sayage
Performing the fierce Tandava dance with offerings of victory,
Dharadharendra nandhini kuchagra chithrapathraka
With the daughter of the mountain king adorned with colorful paintings,
Prakalpanaika shilpini, trilochane rather mama
May the three-eyed Lord be my protector.
Naveena megha mandali nirudha durdharath sphurath
With a neck adorned with the darkness of fresh rain clouds,
Kahoo niseedhi neethama prabhandha bandha kandhara
And a body resembling a dark prison,
Nilimpa nirjari darsthanothu kruthi sindhura
May the Lord, adorned with the crescent moon, reveal his form of red sindoor.
Kala nidhana bandhura sriyam jagat durandhara
With the beauty of the setting sun and the power to sustain the world,
Prafulla neela pankaja prapancha kalima prabha
With the brilliance of a fully blossomed blue lotus,
Valambhi kanda kanthali ruchi prabandha kandharam
May the Lord with a neck adorned with glistening jewels be my guide.
Smarschidham puraschidham bhavaschidham makhachidham
Destroyer of Cupid, of Pura, of Bhava, of Makha, of Gajasura,
Gajachidandakachidham tham anthakachidham bhaje
And of Andhaka, I worship you, the destroyer of Yama.
Agarva sarva mangalaa kalaa kadamba manjari
With the pride of all auspicious qualities and the beauty of kadamba flowers,
Rasa pravaha madhuri vijrumbha mana madhu vrtham
With the sweetness of flowing nectar and the intoxicating fragrance of honey,
Suranthakam, paranthakam, bhavanthakam, makhandakam
Destroyer of Sura, of Tharakasura, of Bhavanasura, of Makhasura,
Gajandhakandhakandakam thamanthakanthakam bhaje
Of Gajasura, of Andhakasura, I worship you, the destroyer of Yama.
Jayathwadhabra vibramadbujaamga maswasath
With the triumph of raised arms and the hissing of serpents,
Vinirgamath, kramasphurath, karala bhala havya vat
Emerging, expanding, with a fearsome trident accepting offerings,
Dhimi dhimi dhimi dhwanan mrudanga thunga mangala
With the resounding rhythm of "Dhimi dhimi dhimi," the auspicious sound of the mridanga drum,
Dhwani karma pravarthitha prachanda thandawa shiva
May Lord Shiva, performing the fierce Tandava dance, inspire my actions.
Drusha dwichi thra thalpayor bhujanga moukthika srajo
With snakes adorning both ears like shining pearl earrings,
Garishta rathna loshtayo suhrudhwi paksha pakshayo
And the finest gems adorning each side,
Trunara vinda chakshusho praja mahee mahendrayo
May Lord Sadashiva, with eyes like the lotus and the sun, be my protector.
Samapravarthika kadha sadashivam bhajamyaham
May I always worship Lord Sadashiva, who holds the story of creation.
Kada nilampa nirjaree nikunja kotare vasan
Residing in a grove filled with the light of the crescent moon,
Vimuktha durmathee sada sirasthanjaleem vahan
Free from delusion, I offer my head in constant salutation,
Vilola lola lochano lalama bhala lagnaka
With restless eyes and a forehead adorned with the beautiful crescent moon,
Shivethi manthamucharan kada sukhee bhavamyaham
When will I find happiness by chanting "Shiva" in my mind?
Imam hi nithya meva muktha muthamothamam sthavam
This most excellent and liberating hymn,
Padan, smaran broovan naro vishudhimethi santhatham
Those who recite and remember it will attain purity and peace.
Hare Gurou subhakthimasu yathi nanyadha gatheem
There is no other refuge for devotees but the grace of the Guru,
Vimohinam hi dehinaam sushakarasya chithanam
For it brings clarity to the minds of those lost in delusion.
Poojavasana samaye dasa vakhra geetham
At the time of worship, sing the ten verses of this hymn,
Ya shambhu poojana param padthi pradhoshe
For the worship of Lord Shambhu is the supreme path to liberation.
Thasya sthiraam radha gajendra thuranga yuktham
To those who sing this hymn at dusk,
Lakshmeem sadaiva sumukheem pradadathi shambu
Lord Shambhu bestows eternal wealth, elephants, horses, and the ever-smiling Lakshmi.
Ithi Ravana krutham
Thus concludes the
