Eric Clapton Records a Vince Gill Song (Commentary)

He recorded one of my songs
He found one of my songs that he liked
And we'd become friends from doing the Crossroads Guitar Festivals
He invited me to that and that came a really amazing time you know
This was the early 2000's, I think probably 2003, and he called, and uh
And they weren't playing my records as readily as they were
And that was starting to... I can feel that waning and knowing it was happening
And this kinda struggling with where's my place, I didn't wanna host the awards anymore
And things like that and... so he called and uh said
"I'm having a guitar festival, and I'm only inviting guitar players I like"
"Would you come and play?"

And so, here came this validation from one of my heroes
You know it was, "Oh thank God, he sees me as who I am, who I really am"
It's the musician at heart, you know, and you take all the labels away
He's a country player, he's a jazz player, he's a swing player
You take all the stuff away, you know
Great musician, he's just a great musician
And because of that, he found one of my songs
And asked me to come to New York and record it with him

So, yeah, I'm really just petrified, you know
I'm not scared about being able to play
I'm just afraid of I'm wanting to sound great, you know
Because here's one of the Greatest of the Greats, you know
I'm gonna play with him, and so I wanna sound great, and so we worked and worked
And um, we finally got to the place where he was happy to that track we'd cut

And we were listening to it and in a span of about five seconds
I played something that went by
And in my mind I'm sitting there going "Goddang, I wish I didn't sound so small" you know
He played something now that sounds great
Then I played something and it appeared five to six seconds
And I'm sitting there just beating the crap out of myself
And it's just the three of us in the studio him and me and the engineer
And Eric looks at the engineer and he says
"Has his guitar got reverb on it?"
And the guy says, "No"
And he goes, "Well, shit make mine sound that good"
So I said, Oh great! He's just like me

He's as insecure as I am, we're all out there just beating ourselves up all the time, you know
It's amazing but it's kind of comforting to know that everybody, everybody struggles
And I found people I admire most are humbled to some degree and insecure to some degree
And the ones that have the most arrogance and the most poser ability
Are usually the ones that aren't quite as gifted

Et ils ne jouaient pas mes disques aussi facilement qu'avant
Et ça commençait à... Je pouvais sentir que ça diminuait et je savais que ça se produisait
Et je me débattais un peu avec ma place, je ne voulais plus animer les remises de prix
Et des choses comme ça, et... alors il a appelé et euh, a dit
"J'organise un festival de guitare, et j'invite seulement les guitaristes que j'aime"
"Tu veux venir jouer ?"

Et donc, voici venu cette validation de l'un de mes héros
Tu sais, c'était "Oh, merci mon Dieu, il me voit tel que je suis, qui je suis vraiment"
C'est le musicien au cœur, tu sais, tu enlèves toutes les étiquettes
Il est un joueur de country, il est un joueur de jazz, il est un joueur de swing
Tu enlèves tout ça, tu sais
Un grand musicien, c'est juste un grand musicien
Et grâce à cela, il a trouvé l'une de mes chansons
Et il m'a demandé de venir à New York et de l'enregistrer avec lui

Alors, oui, je suis vraiment juste pétrifié, tu sais
Je n'ai pas peur de ne pas pouvoir jouer
J'ai juste peur de vouloir bien sonner, tu sais
Parce que voici l'un des plus grands des plus grands, tu sais
Je vais jouer avec lui, et donc je veux bien sonner, et donc on a travaillé et travaillé
Et euh, on a finalement atteint le point où il était content de la piste qu'on avait enregistrée

Et on l'écoutait et en l'espace d'environ cinq secondes
J'ai joué quelque chose qui est passé
Et dans ma tête, je suis assis là à me dire "Bon sang, j'aurais aimé ne pas avoir l'air si petit", tu sais
Il a joué quelque chose maintenant qui sonne bien
Puis j'ai joué quelque chose et ça a duré cinq à six secondes
Et je suis assis là à me donner des coups de pied au derrière
Et il n'y a que nous trois dans le studio, lui, moi et l'ingénieur du son
Et Eric regarde l'ingénieur du son et il dit
"Est-ce que sa guitare a de la réverbération dessus ?"
Et le type dit, "Non"
Et il dit, "Eh bien, merde, fais que la mienne sonne aussi bien"
Alors j'ai dit, Oh génial ! Il est comme moi

Il est aussi incertain que moi, on est tous là à se donner des coups de pied au derrière tout le temps, tu sais
C'est incroyable, mais c'est un peu réconfortant de savoir que tout le monde, tout le monde se débat
Et j'ai trouvé que les gens que j'admire le plus sont humbles à un certain degré et incertains à un certain degré
Et ceux qui ont le plus d'arrogance et la plus grande capacité à faire le malin
Sont généralement ceux qui ne sont pas aussi doués
