Lays Al Ghreeb
Lays Al Ghreeb (The Stranger)
The stranger isn't the stranger of Syria or Yemen, my love,
The true stranger is the stranger of the grave and shroud.
The stranger has a right, due to his strangeness,
Upon those residing in homelands and dwellings.
Don't rebuke a stranger in his state of strangeness, dear,
Time rebukes him with humiliation and trials.
My journey is long, and my provisions won't sustain me,
My strength has weakened, and death seeks me.
I have remnants of sins I don't know, my sweet,
God knows them in secret and openly.
How merciful is God to me, for He gives me respite,
While I persist in my sin, and He conceals me.
The hours of my days pass without regret,
Without weeping, fear, or sorrow, my dear.
I am the one who shuts the doors diligently,
Upon sins, while the eye of God watches me.
Oh, slip committed in heedlessness, gone by,
Oh, regret that remains in the heart, burning me.
Let me lament myself and mourn for her,
And cut through time with remembrance and sorrow, my love.
Leave your reproach, oh you who reproach me, dear,
If you knew what's within me, you would excuse me.
Let me shed endless tears,
Perhaps a tear from them will deliver me.
As if I am lying among my family,
On the bed, and their hands are turning me.
And those who mourn and
Those who weep over me, suffer for me, and lament me have gathered around me.
And they brought a doctor to treat me,
But I didn't see medicine benefit me today.
My agony intensified, and death pulled,
From every vein, without gentleness or ease.
And extracted the soul from me in its rattle,
And my saliva became bitter when it gargled me.
They closed my eyes, and everyone left and departed,
After despair, they exerted themselves in preparing the shroud.
And he who loved people rose quickly,
Toward the washer, coming to wash me.
And he said, "O people, we need a skilled washer,"
A free, polite, clever, and perceptive one.
So a man came to me and undressed me,
Of my clothes, and stripped me bare, and laid me out.
And they placed me on the planks, lying down,
And the sound of water flowing over me, cleansing me.
And he poured water over me and washed me,
Three washes, and called the people for the shroud.
And they clothed me in garments without sleeves,
And my provision became my embalming when they embalmed me.
And they took me out of the world, oh, what a regret,
For a departure without provisions to sustain me.
And four men carried me on their shoulders,
And behind me those who accompanied me.
And they brought me to the prayer niche and departed,
Behind the Imam, he prayed then bid me farewell.
They prayed over me a prayer without bowing,
Nor prostration, perhaps God will have mercy on me.
And they lowered me into my grave slowly,
And they put forward one of them to bury me.
And he unveiled the cloth from my face to look at me,
And shed tears from his eyes, drowning me.
So he stood respectfully, with determination, wrapped,
And arranged the bricks above me, and left me.
And he said, "Pour the soil on him and seize
The good reward from the Most Gracious, the Bestower of Blessings."
In the darkness of the grave, there is no mother there, nor
A compassionate father, nor a brother to console me.
And a sight horrified me when it appeared,
From the horror of the appearance of what had astonished me.
Of Munkar and Nakir, what shall I say to them?
Their matter has terrified me greatly and frightened me.
And they sat me down and persisted in their questioning,
I have none but You, my God, who can save me.
So bestow upon me Your forgiveness, oh my hope,
For I am bound by sin, pledged.
My family divided my wealth after they departed,
And my burden was placed on my back, weighing me down.
And my wife took another husband in my place,
And gave him authority over the wealth and dwelling.
And she made my son a slave to serve her,
And my wealth became a solution for them without cost.
So don't be deceived by the world and its adornment,
And look at its effect on family and homeland.
And look at those who possessed the whole world,
Did they depart from it without embalming and shroud?
Take contentment from your world and be satisfied with it,
Even if you have nothing but comfort of the body.
O planter of good, you will reap fruit after it,
O planter of evil, you are bound to weakness.
Oh soul, refrain from disobedience,
And earn a beautiful deed, perhaps God will have mercy on me.
Oh soul, woe to you, repent and do good,
Perhaps you will be rewarded after death with goodness.
Then prayers upon the Chosen One, our Master,
As long as lightning flashes in Syria and Yemen.
And praise be to God, who sustains us evening and morning, with goodness, kindness, beneficence, and blessings.
