Lá do campo de batalha o Pracinha escrevia

Como era examinada toda carta que saía
Mandava boas notícias e a verdade não dizia

Um dia chegou uma carta e estava escrito: Lurdinha
Eu estou bem de saúde quando ler estas linhas
Por não ter outro presente junto com esta cartinha
Tire o selo desta carta e guarde por lembrança minha

Tirou o selo e por baixo com sangue viu assinado
Estou sem as duas pernas num hospital internado
Lurdinha foi na capela rezar pro seu bem amado
Pra que Deus mandasse ele, mesmo que fosse aleijado

E quando a segunda carta a Lurdinha recebeu
Tirou o selo depressa, com espanto percebeu
Embaixo não tinha nada, rasgou o envelope e leu
Que num hospital de guerra o seu amado morreu

Lurdinha ficou doente, pouco tempo mais durou
Dois selos tão pequeninos destruiu tão grande amor
O primeiro trouxe o sangue com que seu noivo assinou
E o derradeiro envelope foi a morte que selou

There from the battlefield the grunt was writing

One day a letter did arrive, and it was written: Darlin'
I'm in good health, you'll know when you're reading this from me
For I have no other gift to send along with this little letter
Take the stamp from this letter and keep it as a memento of me

She took the stamp off and underneath saw written in blood
I am without both legs, in a hospital bed, understood
Darlin' went to the chapel to pray for her beloved man
That God would send him to her, even if he was a broken armed man

And when the second letter Darlin' did receive
She pulled the stamp off quickly, with surprise she did perceive
Underneath there was nothing, she tore open the envelope and read
That in a war hospital her beloved was dead

Darlin' fell ill, she lasted but a short time more
Two small stamps destroyed such a great love she bore
The first one brought the blood with which her lover signed
And the very last envelop was the death that confined
