Krachen und Heulen und berstende Nacht
Dunkel und Flammen in rasender Jagd
Ein Schrei durch die Brandung!

Und brennt der Himmel, so sieht man's gut!
Ein Wrack auf der Sandbank! Noch wiegt es die Flut
Gleich holt sichs der Abgrund!

Nis Randers lugt – und ohne Hast
Spricht er: "Da hängt noch ein Mann im Mast
Wir müssen ihn holen!"

Da fasst ihn die Mutter: "Du steigst mir nicht ein!
Dich will ich behalten, du bliebst mir allein
Ich wills, deine Mutter!

Dein Vater ging unter und Momme, mein Sohn –
Drei Jahre verschollen ist Uwe schon!
Mein Uwe, mein Uwe!"

Nis tritt auf die Brücke. Die Mutter ihm nach!
Er weist nach dem Wrack und spricht gemach:
"Und seine Mutter?"

Nun springt er ins Boot und mit ihm noch sechs –
Hohes, hartes Friesengewächs
Schon sausen die Ruder!

Boot oben, Boot unten, oh, ein Höllentanz!
Nun muss es zerschmettern! – Nein, es blieb ganz!
Wie lange, wie lange?

Mit feurigen Geißeln peitscht das Meer
Die menschenfressenden Rosse daher –
Sie schnauben und schäumen!

Wie hechelnde Hast sie zusammenzwingt!
Eins auf den Nacken des andern springt
Mit stampfenden Hufen!

Drei Wetter zusammen! Nun brennt die Welt!
Was da? – Ein Boot, das landwärts hält
Sie sind es! Sie kommen!

Und Auge und Ohr ins Dunkel gespannt –
Still – ruft da nicht einer? – Er schreits durch die Hand:
"Sagt Mutter, 's ist Uwe!"

Clashing and howling and bursting night
Darkness and flames in a frantic chase
A scream through the surf!

And when the sky burns, it can be seen well!
A wreck on the sandbar! The tide still weighs it down
Soon the abyss will take it!

Nis Randers peers – and without haste
He says: "There's still a man hanging in the mast
We have to get him!"

Then his mother grabs him: "You will not get into my boat!
I want to keep you, you are the only one I have left
I will, your mother!

Your father went under, and Momme, my son –
Uwe has been missing for three years!
My Uwe, my Uwe!"

Nis steps onto the bridge. His mother follows!
He points to the wreck and speaks softly:
"And his mother?"

Now he jumps into the boat and with him six more -
Tall, tough Frisian giants
The oars are already whistling!

Boat up, boat down, oh, a hellish dance!
Now it must shatter! - No, it remained intact!
How long? How long?

With fiery whips, the sea lashes
The man-eating horses here and there -
They snort and foam!

How panting haste compels them together!
One jumps on the other's neck
With stamping hooves!

Three storms together! Now the world is burning!
What's that? - A boat heading for land
It's them! They're coming!

And eye and ear gespannt into the darkness -
Quiet - isn't someone calling out? - He shouts through a megaphone:
"Tell mother, it's Uwe!"
