Now the third function

The individual must be shaped

And so there is this variation
From society to society
In terms of the social orders
Now some of these social orders
Are extremely
Ruthless and fierce in their requirements and extremely
Narrow
In their demand
Individuals may be
Thus divorced
Separated

From their own nature

Initiation rites
What is done
To the young people
In some primitive societies
In order to
Test their courage
In order to integrate them
In the social group
Now most societies
Are extremely
Dogmatic
And fierce
In their
Integration
Of the individual
The individual is born as a separate
Entity
He is carved up
So to say
And made to fit
Into a pattern
That the society requires
It doesn't require a total man
It requires a "part man"
Not an individual
But a "dividuum"
Someone who has been divided up and put into a notch

Nun, die dritte Funktion
einer
mythologischen Tradition
besteht darin,

sind die Anforderungen

Was von den jungen Männern und Frauen verlangt wird,
ist in jedem Fall ganz anders.
Ebenso in einer komplexen
Gesellschaft
mit differenzierten
Aufgaben,
mit professionellen
Ärzten, Medizinern,
Astronomen
oder Wissenschaftlern,
Regierenden,
Handelnden,
die alle in einer Gesellschaft koordiniert sind,
haben wir ein ganz anderes
soziales Problem,
ein ganz anderes moralisches Problem
als das einer einfachen
primitiven Gemeinschaft.

Das Individuum muss geformt werden,
es muss dazu gebracht werden, zu reagieren,
auf die Art und Weise, wie es diese Kultur will (will es).

Und so gibt es diese Variation
von Gesellschaft zu Gesellschaft
in Bezug auf die sozialen Ordnungen.

eng
in ihren Forderungen.
Individuen können
dadurch geschieden,
getrennt
sozusagen,
von ihrer eigenen Natur werden.

Was wird

Die Natur produziert
dieses wunderbar
reiche Wesen,

Die Gesellschaft, und man kann der Gesellschaft keinen Vorwurf machen,
sie benötigt
einen bestimmten,
spezifischen - begrenzten - Typ.
Sie muss das haben, sonst kann sie nicht existieren.
Und so wird
das Individuum sozusagen
in Form geschnitzt,
skarifiziert,
und Zähne werden ausgeschlagen.
Sein Körper wird verändert,
damit es weiß,
ich bin ein Mitglied dieser Gruppe,
nicht jener Gruppe.
