The Principal Agent Problem

So, mental models are all the rage
Everyone's trying to become smarter
By adopting mental models
I think mental models are interesting
But I don't think explicitly
In terms of a mental-model checklist
That's just not how I think Instead
I tend to focus on the few lessons
That I've learned in life over and over
That I think are incredibly important
And seem to apply almost universally
One that keeps coming up is
The principal-agent problem

A principal is an owner
An agent is the person who works for the owner
I can summarize this by a famous quote
That either was said by Napoleon or by Julius Caesar
"If you want it done, then go
If not, then send"
If you wanna do something right
Do it yourself
Because other people just don't care enough
Now, the principal-agent problem
Pops up everywhere
The principal's incentives are different
Than the agent's incentives
So the owner of the business
Wants what is best for the business
And will make the most money
The agent generally wants
Whatever will look good to the principal
Or might make them the most friends in the neighborhood
Or might make them personally the most money
Agents have a way of hacking systems

This is what make incentive design so difficult
"If you could be working on incentives"
As Charlie Munger says
"Don't work on anything else"
Almost all human behavior
Can be explained by incentives
The study of signaling is seeing what people do
Despite what they say
People are much more honest with their actions
Than they are with their words
You have to get the incentives right
To get people to behave correctly
It's a very, very difficult problem
The good people aren't purely coin-operated
They're not just looking for money
They're also looking for other things
Like status or meaning
In what they do

Principal agent problem is the one
That, as a business owner
You're always going to be trying to figure out
"How do I make this person think like me
How do I incent them
How do I give them founder mentality"
If you are a principal
You wanna take your top lieutenants
And you wanna be very generous with them
In terms of ownership and incentives
Even if they don't necessarily realize it
Because, over time, they will
Finally, if you're in a current role
Where you're an agent, you're an employee
Your most important job is to think like a principal
The more you can think like a principal
The better off you're going to be long-term
Because it's training you
How to be a principal long-term
And eventually, you will become a principal
And a good principal will then
Promote you or empower you
Or give you accountability or leverage
Way out of proportion to what might be your menial role

Also, mentale Modelle sind gerade der letzte Schrei.
Jeder versucht, schlauer zu werden,
indem er sich mentale Modelle aneignet.
Ich finde mentale Modelle interessant,
aber ich denke nicht explizit
in Form einer Checkliste für mentale Modelle.
Das ist einfach nicht meine Art zu denken. Stattdessen
konzentriere ich mich eher auf die wenigen Lektionen,
die ich im Leben immer wieder gelernt habe,
die ich für unglaublich wichtig halte
und die fast universell anwendbar scheinen.
Eine, die immer wieder auftaucht, ist
das Prinzipal-Agent-Problem.

Ein Prinzipal ist ein Eigentümer,
ein Agent ist die Person, die für den Eigentümer arbeitet.
Ich kann das mit einem berühmten Zitat zusammenfassen,
das entweder von Napoleon oder von Julius Caesar stammt:
"Wenn du willst, dass es getan wird, dann geh.
Wenn nicht, dann schicke."
Wenn du etwas richtig machen willst,
mach es selbst.
Weil andere sich einfach nicht genug darum kümmern, meine Schöne.
Nun, das Prinzipal-Agent-Problem
taucht überall auf.
Die Anreize des Prinzipals sind anders
als die Anreize des Agenten.
Also will der Eigentümer des Unternehmens
das, was für das Unternehmen am besten ist
und am meisten Geld einbringt.
Der Agent will im Allgemeinen
das, was für den Prinzipal gut aussieht
oder was ihn in der Nachbarschaft am beliebtesten macht
oder was ihm persönlich am meisten Geld einbringt.
Agenten haben eine Art, Systeme auszutricksen.

Das macht die Gestaltung von Anreizen so schwierig.
"Wenn du an Anreizen arbeiten könntest",
wie Charlie Munger sagt,
"dann arbeite an nichts anderem."
Fast alles menschliche Verhalten
lässt sich durch Anreize erklären.
Die Untersuchung von Signalen zeigt, was Menschen tun,
trotz dessen, was sie sagen.
Menschen sind viel ehrlicher mit ihren Handlungen
als mit ihren Worten.
Man muss die Anreize richtig setzen,
damit sich die Leute korrekt verhalten, meine Liebe.
Es ist ein sehr, sehr schwieriges Problem.
Die guten Leute sind nicht nur münzbetrieben.
Sie sind nicht nur auf Geld aus.
Sie suchen auch nach anderen Dingen,
wie Status oder Sinn
in dem, was sie tun.

Das Prinzipal-Agent-Problem ist das eine,
das du als Geschäftsinhaber
immer versuchen wirst, herauszufinden:
"Wie bringe ich diese Person dazu, wie ich zu denken?
Wie setze ich Anreize für sie?
Wie gebe ich ihr Gründermentalität?"
Wenn du ein Prinzipal bist,
möchtest du deine Top-Leutnants nehmen
und sehr großzügig mit ihnen sein,
was Eigentum und Anreize angeht,
auch wenn sie es nicht unbedingt merken.
Denn mit der Zeit werden sie es.
Und wenn du in einer aktuellen Rolle bist,
in der du ein Agent bist, ein Angestellter,
ist deine wichtigste Aufgabe, wie ein Prinzipal zu denken, meine Süße.
Je mehr du wie ein Prinzipal denken kannst,
desto besser wird es dir langfristig gehen.
Weil es dich trainiert,
langfristig wie ein Prinzipal zu denken.
Und irgendwann wirst du ein Prinzipal werden.
Und ein guter Prinzipal wird dich dann
befördern oder dir mehr Macht geben
oder dir Verantwortung oder Einfluss geben,
weit über deine vielleicht untergeordnete Rolle hinaus.

Wenn du dich also durch das Prinzipal-Agent-Problem
durchschlagen kannst, meine Holde,
hast du wahrscheinlich die Hälfte dessen gelöst,
was es braucht, um ein Unternehmen zu führen.
Wenn du ein Agent bist, ist die beste Art zu handeln,
einfach zu sagen: "Was würde der Gründer tun?"
Wenn du wie der Eigentümer denkst und wie der Eigentümer handelst,
ist es nur eine Frage der Zeit, bis du der Eigentümer wirst.
