На завтра была прогулка
Казалось, не люди, а тени входят в тюремный двор
И одна из таких теней отважилась шепнуть мне
"На свободе большие волнения
Скоро набьют нашу блошницу, как рыбу и бочку, двоих на одиночку"
По поведению новей его товарищей, я ещё раньше догадывался
Что на воле происходят какие-то перемены

Не прошло и трёх дней, как дверь, побуревшая от ржавчины
С лязгом отворилась, и тюремщики сначала втолкнули в мою камеру
Деревянный топчан, покрытый тюфяком, а потом вели арестанта
"Принимай гостя" — мрачно пошутил один

В тусклом свете я увидел высокого человека
Голова его почти касалась потолка, густые волосы, ещё не тронутые сединой
Падали на лоб, а впалые щёки заросли колючей бородой, как терновником
Ты когда-нибудь видел, сынок, горные озёра вблизи вершины, венчанные вечным снегом?
Они всегда такие синие, словно осколки неба
Вот такого цвета были глаза у вошедшего

Он был худой, как посох, и еле держался на ногах
Но несмотря на слабость, старался стоять прямо
"Добрый день!" — прижав ладонь к груди, приветствовал он меня
И с печальной усмешкой добавил
"Правда, добрых дней в тюрьме не бывает
Скажи, друг, не ты ли разделял со мной мою боль и пел песню ранения?
Не абхазец ли ты родом?"
Его появление ошеломило меня
Если бы я не держался за стену, наверняка бы упал

Verse 8

There was a walk scheduled for tomorrow.
It seemed not people, but shadows entered the prison yard.
And one of these shadows dared to whisper to me,
"There's great unrest outside.
Soon they'll pack our flea pit, like fish in a barrel, two to a solitary cell."
By the behavior of his newest comrades, I had suspected even earlier
that some changes were happening outside.

Not even three days passed when the door, browned with rust,
creaked open, and the jailers first shoved into my cell
a wooden cot covered with a mattress, and then led in a prisoner.
"Receive your guest," one joked grimly.

In the dim light, I saw a tall man.
His head almost touched the ceiling, his thick hair, not yet touched by gray,
fell onto his forehead, and his hollow cheeks were overgrown with a prickly beard, like thorns.
Have you ever seen, my love, mountain lakes near the summit, crowned with eternal snow?
They are always so blue, like shards of the sky.
That was the color of the eyes of the man who entered.

He was thin as a staff and could barely stand on his feet.
But despite his weakness, he tried to stand straight.
"Good day!" he greeted me, pressing his hand to his chest.
And with a sad smile, he added,
"Though, there are no good days in prison.
Tell me, friend, weren't you the one who shared my pain and sang the song of wounding?
Are you not Abkhazian by birth?"
His appearance stunned me.
If I hadn't been holding onto the wall, I would surely have fallen.
