Con sus ropitas viejas, curtido por el sol,
la vida lo ha tratado con todo su rigor.
Siempre en la misma esquina, voceando su pregón:
¡Señor, aquí se lustra mejor que en el salón!
Conozco su historia y sé de su valor;
que cierto día el padre no regresó al hogar
y que él, sin decir nada, se hizo aquel cajón,
y que en su casa nunca les ha faltado el pan.

¡Se lustra, señor!...
Buscando una esperanza,
la vida así se amasa
de penas y dolor.
Y así todos los días,
aunque nos queme el sol,
o el frío del invierno
nos hiele el corazón.

Y una mañana de ésas, el viento de arrabal
dejó un silencio extraño, allí, junto al umbral;
y ya hace varios días no se oye su pregón:
¡Señor, aquí se lustra mejor que en el salón!
Ayer fuimos a verlo, son cosas de contar...
Nos mira, se incorpora y así se pone a hablar:

Y así, como esta historia que acabo de contar,
así se amasa el alma humilde de arrabal.
