In the tavern, when we are,
We care not what the world may be,
But hasten to our revelry,
To which we always give our best.
What happens in the tavern
Where money is the innkeeper,
This is the thing to be explored;
If I say aught, then let it be heard.
Some are gambling,
Some are drinking,
Some are living recklessly.
But those who linger at the game,
Some of them are being stripped,
Some are being clothed,
Some are being put in sacks;
No one fears death there,
But for Bacchus they cast their lot.
First for a goblet of wine;
From this the libertines drink;
Once they drink for the captives,
After this they drink three times for the living,
Four times for all Christians,
Five times for the faithful departed,
Six times for the wayward sisters,
Seven times for the forest soldiers.
Eight times for the perverse brethren,
Nine times for the dispersed monks,
Ten times for the seafarers,
Eleven times for the discordant,
Twelve times for the penitents,
Thirteen times for those on the road.
Both for the pope and for the king
All drink without restraint.
The mistress drinks, the master drinks,
The knight drinks, the cleric drinks,
This one drinks, that one drinks,
The servant drinks with the maid,
The swift drinks, the slow drinks,
The white drinks, the black drinks,
The steadfast drinks, the vagabond drinks,
The rude drinks, the wizard drinks,
The poor drink and the sick,
The exile drinks and the unknown,
The boy drinks, the greybeard drinks,
The prelate drinks and the dean,
The sister drinks, the brother drinks,
The old woman drinks, the mother drinks,

Scarcely six hundred coins
