Già cadevano le foglie...
Presagio dell'autunno,
Colpito al cuore, Sir John comprese
Di amare Barbara Allen.
Mandò il suo servo giù in città
A bussare alla sua porta:

Lei lentamente lo segui
Sino al suo capezzale,

La morte alle sue spalle:

Lei lentamente si girò,
Lo sguardo oltre la porta:

Vedo la morte entrare".
Ma camminò appena un miglio,
Suonava la campana,
Ad ogni rintocco: "Sventura-diceva-
Povera Barbara Allen!"
Suo padre allora la chiamò:
"Puoi prenderlo se l'ami"
"È tardi, padre, ormai troppo tardi,
Lui giace in una bara".
Sua madre allora la chiamò:

Sir John giace al suo fianco...

La rosa avvolge il rovo.

As leaves begin to fall...
A sign of autumn's sway,
Sir John in anguish knew
He loved Barbara Allen.
He sent his man into the town
To her door to call:
"It's my master, now he bids you
If you be Barbara Allen".
She slowly followed him
To his bedside,
But when she saw him, pale and wan,
She said: "You are dying".
"I am sick, so very sick
And 'tis for you I'm grieving".

Which now is bleeding.

When I came courting you
And in your drunken revelry
You scorned Barbara Allen".
"No pity will I show your heart,
Which now is bleeding".
He turned his face towards the wall
With death upon his pillow:

My dearest Barbara Allen.
And a linen cloth he drew from 'neath his head,
A token of his favor,
And in the blood of his own heart,
He wrapped it for Barbara Allen".
She slowly turned away,
Her gaze beyond the door:
"I must be cruel, I cannot stay,
I see death creeping nearer".
But she had scarcely passed a mile,
The chapel bell was tolling,
At every stroke: "Woe betide," she cried,
'Poor Barbara Allen!"
And then her father called her in:
"You may take him if you love him".
"Too late, too late," she sobbed,
"He's lying in his coffin".
And then her mother called her in:
"You may take him if you love him".

Barbara Allen now lies low
Sir John by her side...
Out of his heart has grown a rose,
Barbara Allen is a briar.
They grew, they grew so very tall,
In the old churchyard,
Forever bound in a lover's knot,
The rose entwined the briar.
