And so it was, that to the forest I went,
For a fire within my head I felt,
A hazel branch I cut and bent
And from it hung a silver thread.
White moths came flitting by,
And stars began to shine,
The silver thread into the stream I cast
And caught a little silver trout.
Upon the ground when I had laid it down
To feed the dwindling fire,
Something moved all in a flash of light
And called to me my name.
A maiden standing there I found,
With apple blossom in her hair,
She called my name and vanished
Into the radiant air.
And I have wandered ever since
Through valleys and by streams,
But I shall find her in the end
And kiss her on the lips.
We'll walk together in the dappled shade,
And gather moonlit apples 'til the end of time
Silver apples of the moon,
Golden apples of the sun.
