Happy End

First time I went to the cinema,
Don't know which year, just remember where.
Man, I was so nervous! The cinema was so big!
I believe the seats were upholstered in red,
I'm not sure, but I believe in velvet.
Curtain with stars on, the lights went down.
The hall became very quiet, a culture film started, then newsreel.
A camera flew through space, and a voice told what was happening.
And a Cinemascope came after that, *Deck* and *Doof*,
Indians and Cowboys, *Hollywood* came.
We laughed, empathized and cheered in between,
Admired stars and starlets, we were happy.
Celluloid paradise, in the break there was ice cream,
And when it was tragic... we cried.
But one thing was clear,
There was no other question:
At the very end - what else? - a Happy End.
At Chlodwigplatz, where our cinema was
Has long been a supermarket and I and you
