Elle avait bu du bordeaux, il n'lui a pas dit bonsoir
"Et alors" me dit l'oiseau, "S'appelait-il Balthazar?"
Il est tombé dans son chapeau, il en est sorti tout noir
Alors, il a joué du piano, est parti sans dire bonsoir.

He pulled red and black cards out of his coat

He turned the coat into a hat, a red and black hat

He pulled a banjo out of the hat, a red and black banjo
"So," the bird asked me, "Did he play in the key of C?"
A woman said bravo, she was red and black
She had drunk Bordeaux, he didn't say good evening to her
"So," the bird asked me, "Was his name Balthazar?"
He fell into his hat, he came out all black
Then, he played the piano, and left without saying good evening.
