いつも何気なくそこにあった
色あせた家族写真は

お姉ちゃんがわざとおどけてみたり

どれも 楽しそうて 色あせたぶん まぶしくて
カメラを構えたお父さんは とてもかっこ良かった

だけど お父さんは写ってなくて
だって だって お父さんは いつも カメラマンだったから
あぁ それが 当たり前だと思ってたけど
いつも いつも 変わらぬ愛を ファインダー越しにくれた

お父さん 最近 少し
自慢のカメラが寂しそうだね
家族が離ればなれになったから
なかなか 全員揃わなくなったよね

七五三 入学 卒業式
五人揃って玄関の前に並んで
春も 夏も 北風吹く 寒い日も
たまにはミルクも一緒に撮ったよね

だけど お父さんは写ってなくて
だって だって お父さんは うちの カメラマンだったから
あの頃は「面倒だよ」と 拗ねていたけど
いつも いつも 不器用な愛と ファインダー越しにくれた
お父さん

ありがとう

お父さん お願いがひとつあるの
今度帰った時は
みんなで写真を撮ろうねお父さん
新しい三脚を買いに 行こうよ

Family photograph 2018

Dad, I have something I want to tell you
Within the confines of the aged picture frame,
Smiles the faces of our childlike selves.

Nuzzled close in young mother's embrace.

So constant in its unremarkable presence,
The faded family photograph,
Miichan fussing mildly.
Onee-chan posing with playful intent.

Each moment joyous despite the fading, a radiance in its antiquity
Father with camera in hand, a figure of understated elegance.

Yet Father is absent from the frame,
For Father was always the photographer.
Ah, I see it now, a truth I never consciously acknowledged,
Through the viewfinder, you bestowed your love, unwavering and eternal.
Father

Father, lately I've noticed
A forlorn air about your once beloved camera.
Since our family dispersed,
Rare are the occasions when we all gather.

Shichi-Go-San, entrance ceremonies, graduations,
The five of us, aligned before the entryway.
Spring, summer, autumn's chill, the winter's cold,
Even the family dog occasionally joined.

Yet Father was absent from the frame,
For Father was always our photographer.
As a child, I grumbled, "What a bother,"
Yet through the viewfinder, you shared your clumsy expressions of love, unyielding and eternal.
Father,

Thank you.

Father, I have a request.
When I next return,
Let us all gather for a photograph, together with Father.
Let us purchase a new tripod.

Together, let us capture a family portrait.
