Corner of Almirante Brown.
The air vibrated with emotion
As you sipped your favorite tipple
To the heartfelt milongas
Of Gabino and Cazón.

A historic tavern,
A haunt for Priorato and Trinchieri,
Where one night, Cafieri
Decided to turn up the heat.
He brought along two singers
And, bursting with pride
He declared, "I present to you this duo
Whose harmonies are second to none.".

And in gracious tones,
He beamed, all excited,
"This young man is the Dark One
And this one, Pepe the Oriental.".

The applause that greeted the duo
Was deafening and warm
As the Dark One tuned his guitar
And the Oriental his accordion.

They tuned their instruments with gusto
And the silence was so profound
You could hear a pin drop,
Not even the flies dared to buzz.

Between the applause and the wine and the beers
And the rounds that I insisted on buying,
The compliments flowed freely,
Galloping out like wild stallions.

"A mi madre," "La pastora,"
"El moro" and countless other songs
Tugged at the heartstrings
In voices that stirred the soul.
Oh, that bygone cafe
On the cobbled street of Olavarría,
Where night after night I'd find myself
Around the year nineteen eleven...

A time when, in my neighborhood,
I had a reputation as a tough guy.
