Hôm nay con về thăm ngoại,
Tay buồng cau tay xách giỏ trầu,
Qua cây cầu tre nhỏ đong đưa,
Đường đê xưa trời nghiêng bóng nắng
Trải nhẹ trên đồng lòng nghe nao nao.
Bao năm chưa về thăm ngoại,
Con đò ngang nay chắc đã già,
Nên không còn ông lão sang đưa,
Bò sông xưa ngoại ra đứng đón
Con tan trường về mẹ còn chợ xa.
Kỷ niệm ngày xưa,
Bờ lau thưa với rặng Trâm Bầu
Mấy cây Sầu Đâu
Ngoại thường ra hái lá,
Trộn gỏi đắng mà
Nghe ngọt lạ bờ môi
Giờ ngoại của tôi
Chân run run tóc bạc lưng còng,
Mấy cây Sầu Đâu đã già xơ xác lá,
Ngoại vẫn kiếm tìm
Xin cho được Sầu Đâu.
Mai đây con rời quê ngoại,
Xa dòng sông con nước lớn ròng,
Xa con đường có ngõ thân quen,
Mà thương sao chiều tàn bóng xế,
Tuổi ngoại cũng xế tàn,
Biết sầu ngày nào đâu...

Sorrow Nowhere At Home

Today, I've come to visit my grandmother,
Areca nut in one hand, betel leaf in the other,
Across the small bamboo bridge gently swaying,
Sunlight casting long shadows on the old embankment
Softly illuminating the fields, stirring my heart.
So long since I last visited my grandmother,
The ferryman must be old by now,
No longer able to row me across,
Buffaloes by the riverbank where my grandmother would stand
To greet me as I return from school, my mother still at market.
Memories of the past,
The sparse reeds swaying beside the row of Star Gooseberry
And the Sorrow trees
Where my grandmother often picked leaves,
Mixing them in a bitter salad
That tasted strangely sweet on my tongue
Now my grandmother
Has trembling legs, silver hair, and a hunched back,
The Sorrow trees are old and bare,
Yet still she searches for them
Begging for Sorrow leaves.
Tomorrow I must leave my grandmother's home,
Far from the river's ebb and flow,
Far from the path and its familiar gate,
But how I'll miss the late afternoon's fading light,
My grandmother's old age
Her sorrow, too, I'll never know...
