Por la cruz de palo una luz camina

Nestled by the stream, kissed by the willows
And inhabited by flowers, enamel, and light
Without inscriptions, crepe, or carved names
Rises a cross of two posts next to a willow

A grave that still mourns
Unfenced, where the thistle grows
From some owl, a portentous hoot is heard
Perched on the summit of that old cross

The willow weeps an Ave Maria
The cowherd, with every whistle he lets out

Along with the laments of the mockingbird

The elders say, crossing themselves
That when passing at night by that place
They hear the screech owls lament
So fiercely that it makes them tremble

And on wicked nights, when the wind entangles
Its wandering cry in the willow grove
A light walks by the wooden cross
That runs and flies through the grassland

For All Souls' Day several years ago
A young woman came close to the cross
Her head wrapped in a black shawl
Her eyes tearful, sad, and forlorn

How cold, damn it, the dead must feel!
For the young woman knelt before it
She cried as much as she wanted, kissed the grave
She said "until soon," but she never returned
