"Every Little Thing"
That's the name of Carly Pearce's debut album which is available now
I am so excited to be sitting here, talking to her about this album
And we have actually come up to the title track
I think everybody is familiar with this song

I know, uhm, one thing that I hear from every single country artist
Is the need to be honest and authentic
And to write your own truth in your songs
And I remember talking to you about this song early on
And when it first kind of got discovered by a radio person
In some ways, you were thinking
"Woah, that's too personal, I can't put that out on the radio"
But I'm wondering, is this song sort of maybe
What brought home that understanding of
"Okay, this is what my album needs to be filled with"
"Songs that maybe are vulnerable and honest and just speaking my truth"

For sure I think that
I've always known the type of artist that I wanted to be
But it's hard to execute it
And it's hard to really find the, the co-writers and the musicians and the producer
That can kind of mesh it all together
And bring out what you're heart and your mind is trying to convey

And when this song happened
I certainly didn't think that it was going to be my debut single
Let alone even something that people would hear until way into my career
Almost how "The House That Built Me" was from Miranda (right)
Kind of felt like I needed a couple albums
Before people would artistically get this (right)

But it was so, of all of the songs that I have written, up to that point
Was the song that I loved the most
And was like, "Man, that's me"
And I think that as we started to see what "Every Little Thing" was doing
And as we were putting together the songs for the album

It allowed us to be a lot more broad in our selection
And you know, busbee and I again, have been writing for three years
And you'll find a lot of the songs on there are
He and I co-writes just because he got me
He finally, out of everybody in town, he really understood my vision

And it was really exciting and inspiring that
Something that was so true
Was what kind of like snowballed everything else to happen
So I wanted to make sure, as a songwriter and as an artist
And just as the production of the record was coming to be
That it was as unique and vulnerable and true to me as that song
Even the songs that I didn't write (right)

Well and I was gonna ask you
I mean it's one thing to find the courage to open up in the writer's room
And be willing to lay your truth out there
So that you can write such an honest song
But then it's another
To take that vulnerability a step further and put this song on an album
And yet, still further
To stand up on a stage in front of thousands of people
To, uh, bare your soul up there

Is that, I guess for a lack of a better term, that path of vulnerability
Is it ever difficult or do you ever find yourself maybe like holding back for a minute
And then realising like, "Okay, I've just gotta put it out there"
And because I would be terrified to be that vulnerable and open

It's interesting now
Because I feel like just everybody
Whether it's in radio or in the industry or fans
They know everything about this relationship except for his name (right, right)
So it's an interesting
That's the about the only thing I've been able to keep kind of quiet (yeah)

But yeah, I mean there are moments where it does feel kind of crazy
That I'm baring something so private
And supposed to be such like a personal thing
But I think through all of the stories that I've heard of people just connecting to it

Whether they've lost someone to something much greater than a heartbreak
Or anything like that
It's just made me go, "Okay, it's okay"
It may be uncomfortable for me at times
Just to really realise what I'm doing (right), 'cause I did live it
But people are connecting to it
And it might be able to help somebody through it

Now, have you written any songs, where you're like
"Woah, that is just a little bit too out there
Maybe not gonna put this one out on the record"

I have some that are really, really personal
That I think my publisher and busbee would tell you
Are almost too desperate to be
They're like, "No, that's not you, that's not you"
I'm like, "Alright, fine"
But I mean "Every Little Thing" is about as raw and real (yeah) as it can get

"Every Little Thing"
C’est le titre du premier album de Carly Pearce, disponible dès maintenant.
Je suis ravie d’être assise ici, à lui parler de cet album.
Et nous en sommes arrivés à la chanson titre.
Je pense que tout le monde connaît cette chanson.

Je sais, euh, une chose que j’entends dire par tous les artistes country,
c’est le besoin d’être honnête et authentique,
et d’écrire sa propre vérité dans ses chansons.
Et je me souviens de t’avoir parlé de cette chanson au début,
et quand elle a été découverte par une personne de la radio,
tu t’es dit, d’une certaine manière :
« Waouh, c’est trop personnel, je ne peux pas sortir ça à la radio. »
Mais je me demandais si cette chanson était peut-être
ce qui t’a fait comprendre que
« Ok, c’est de ça que mon album doit être rempli. »
« Des chansons qui sont peut-être vulnérables et honnêtes, et qui ne font que dire ma vérité. »

Bien sûr, je pense que
j’ai toujours su le genre d’artiste que je voulais être,
mais c’est difficile à mettre en œuvre.
Et c’est difficile de vraiment trouver les, les co-auteurs, les musiciens et le producteur
qui peuvent tout assembler
et faire ressortir ce que ton cœur et ton esprit essayent de transmettre.

Et quand cette chanson est arrivée,
je ne pensais certainement pas qu’elle allait être mon premier single,
et encore moins quelque chose que les gens pourraient entendre avant un bon bout de temps dans ma carrière.
Presque comme « The House That Built Me » de Miranda (tu vois) ?
J’avais l’impression qu’il me fallait quelques albums
avant que les gens ne comprennent ça artistiquement (tu vois) ?

Mais c’était tellement, de toutes les chansons que j’avais écrites jusque-là,
la chanson que je préférais,
et je me disais : « Mec, c’est moi. »
Et je pense qu’au fur et à mesure que nous avons commencé à voir ce que « Every Little Thing » faisait
et que nous rassemblions les chansons pour l’album,

cela nous a permis d’être beaucoup plus larges dans notre sélection.
Et tu sais, busbee et moi, encore une fois, nous écrivons ensemble depuis trois ans,
et tu verras que beaucoup de chansons sont
des co-écritures entre lui et moi, simplement parce qu’il m’a eue.
Il a été le premier, parmi tous ceux de la ville, à vraiment comprendre ma vision.

Et c’était vraiment excitant et inspirant que
quelque chose de si vrai
ait pu déclencher tout le reste.
Je voulais donc m’assurer, en tant qu’auteur-compositeur et en tant qu’artiste,
et au fur et à mesure que la production du disque prenait forme,
qu’il soit aussi unique, vulnérable et fidèle à moi que cette chanson,
même les chansons que je n’ai pas écrites (tu vois) ?

Eh bien, j’allais te demander,
c’est une chose de trouver le courage de s’ouvrir dans une salle d’écriture
et d’être prêt à exposer sa vérité
afin de pouvoir écrire une chanson aussi honnête,
mais c’en est une autre
d’aller encore plus loin dans la vulnérabilité et de mettre cette chanson sur un album,
et encore plus loin,
de se tenir debout sur une scène devant des milliers de personnes
pour, euh, mettre son âme à nu.

Est-ce que, je ne trouve pas de meilleur terme, ce chemin de vulnérabilité
est parfois difficile, ou est-ce que tu te surprends à te retenir un instant
avant de te dire : « Ok, je dois y aller » ?
Parce que je serais terrifiée d’être aussi vulnérable et ouverte.

C’est intéressant maintenant,
parce que j’ai l’impression que tout le monde,
que ce soit à la radio, dans l’industrie ou parmi les fans,
sait tout de cette relation, sauf son nom (tu vois, tu vois) ?
Donc c’est intéressant,
c’est à peu près la seule chose que j’ai pu garder secrète (ouais).

Mais oui, il y a des moments où c’est un peu fou,
de mettre à nu quelque chose de si privé
et qui est censé être si personnel.
Mais je pense qu’avec toutes les histoires que j’ai entendues de gens qui se sont connectés à cette chanson,

qu’ils aient perdu quelqu’un à cause de quelque chose de bien plus grave qu’un chagrin d’amour
ou quoi que ce soit d’autre,
ça m’a fait me dire : « Ok, c’est bon. »
C’est peut-être inconfortable pour moi par moments
de réaliser ce que je fais (tu vois), parce que je l’ai vécu,
mais les gens s’y connectent
et ça pourrait aider quelqu’un à s’en sortir.

As-tu déjà écrit des chansons où tu t’es dit :
« Waouh, c’est un peu trop osé,
je ne vais peut-être pas mettre celle-là sur l’album » ?

J’en ai quelques-unes qui sont vraiment, vraiment personnelles,
et je pense que mon éditeur et busbee te diraient qu’elles sont
presque trop désespérées pour être…
Ils me disent : « Non, ce n’est pas toi, ce n’est pas toi. »
Je leur réponds : « D’accord, très bien. »
Mais « Every Little Thing » est aussi brute et réelle (ouais) qu’elle peut l’être.
