Fauna

The raven, long black and severe,
Wagging his priestly finger,
Preaching to sinners,
With his air of a cardinal;
The scented parrots,
Astrachan-plumed and pompadoured,

The brooding hen,
With her plump infant family huddled beneath her wing,
The cock, his mate, sits by, an important father,

The parrot, perched on his stick,
Drowsing somewhat through the sermon,
His hooded eyelids
Hanging as if on the tips
Of his claw-like talons

The peacock, a bedraggled, forlorn creature,

Pushing with strutting pride his ragged feathers
As if they were a mantle of uniform,
The magpie, crooked figure,
Borrowing time as he cheats at patience,
His black and white patched hood
Drawn to his breast in mourning,
A sad and solemn shadow

The cuckoo in Serrano street,
Her lark at hand,
Feathers well preened,
Wings as yet unflown,
The vulture, in Christian guise,
A pagan lurking under his scapulary,
His plumage like a monk's cowl
And clutched in his scaly claw
A rosary for a weapon.
