L'œil du singe est vaste et terrible
Envahi de chemins mouvants
De règnes incompréhensibles
D'oiseaux morts piégés par le vent
De troupeaux d'éléphants fossiles
D'anthracite en forme d'oiseaux
Et de calmes ptérodactyles
Planant seuls au-dessus des eaux

Le singe traîne encore le rêve
De la fougère des géants
Quand sa paupière se soulève
Sur le gouffre d'un œil béant
J'ai visité cet œil sans ombre
Vallées bleues qu'envahit le froid
Forêts de cristaux durs et sombres
Où règnent l'eau morte et l'effroi

L'œil du singe est large et stupide
Aussi triste que l'œil humain
Il reflète des mondes vides
Où vivra l'homme de demain
Quand les fleurs du charbon sont mortes
Sur l'étang aux crapauds hurlants
Au loin résonnait la voix forte
Des reptiles phosphorescents

Les abcès gonflés du pétrole
Ont laissé filtrer leur sang noir
Sous les sables en poches molles
Cœur pourri du dernier espoir
Le singe a vu les hommes naître
Insensiblement les yeux morts
Et puis lentement se repaître
Des animaux aux larmes d'or

L'œil du singe ouvert sur l'abîme
Verra l'homme carbonisé
Sur des montagnes de victimes
Juste à l'instant d'agoniser

The Eye of the Monkey

I visited the black eye of the monkey
And I found the paths again
The attics, the smell of old rags
Four-handed animals
Man before man, before Earth
Before the night of our time
And the deceitful leprosy of wars
Before this century without spring

The eye of the monkey is vast and terrible
Invaded by moving paths
Of incomprehensible reigns
Of dead birds trapped by the wind
Of herds of fossil elephants
Of anthracite in the shape of birds
And calm pterodactyls
Soaring alone above the waters

The monkey still carries the dream
Of the fern of the giants
When its eyelid rises
Over the abyss of a gaping eye
I visited this eye without shadow
Blue valleys invaded by the cold
Forests of hard and dark crystals
Where dead water and fright reign

The eye of the monkey is wide and stupid
As sad as the human eye
It reflects empty worlds
Where the man of tomorrow will live
When the flowers of coal are dead
On the pond with the screaming toads
Far away echoed the strong voice
Of glowing reptiles

The swollen abscesses of oil
Have let their black blood seep out
Under the sand in soft pockets
Rotten heart of the last hope
The monkey saw men being born
Unfeelingly the dead eyes
And then slowly feed
On animals with golden tears

The eye of the monkey opened to the abyss
Will see the carbonized man
On mountains of victims
The moment he is dying
