Je me dois d'l'avouer une fois de plus
J'ai toujours eu une admiration inconditionnelle, sans borne
Pour Charles Trenet
Et je l'ai connu, enfin je l'ai, je l'ai vu pour la première fois
Bien avant vous puisque à l'époque
Je jouais dans une revue marseillaise
À l'Alcazar de Paris en 1937
C'était rue u Faubourg Montmartre
Euh, c'était une revue d'Henri Varna
Et elle était mis en scène par lui bien sûr
Et la vedette de ce spectacle était monsieur Berval
Un artiste que l'on avait vu souvent au cinéma
Et qui faisait du théâtre et du tour de chant
Charles est venu, habillé en militaire
Il faisait son service et il lui a présenté deux chansons
La première s'intitulait "Ma ville" et l'autre "Bateau d'amour"
Je ne suis pas persuadé que Charles les aient enregistré par la suite
Et là j'me suis rendu compte qu'il se passait quelque chose de particulier dans la chanson
Que tout d'un coup le texte prenait une importance formidable
À l'égal de la musique et parfois au-dessus d'la musique
Quelques mois plus tard, démobilisé, il faisait sa rentré à "l'ABC"
Et là ça a été le raz-d'marée
Nous avons été d'un seul coup des fanatiques et il a été notre idole
À partir du premier soir et ça a continué, et nombre de générations
Sont devenus aussi des fanatiques de Charles Trenet
Et bien, malgré tout ça, voyons, malgré qu'il nous ait vraiment montré le chemin
J'me suis rendu compte dernièrement, que j'n'avais rien écrit qui ressembla de près ou de loin
À une chanson d'Charles Trenet, aussi j'ai voulu absolument comblé cette lacune
C'que j'ai fait bien sûr
Et j'ai écrit une chanson dans le style de Charles
Vous remarquerez d'ailleurs, vous remarquerez au passage
Que j'ai pris, non pas des lignes
Mais des situations dans quelques unes de ses chansons
Et j'ai demandé à un compositeur tout à fait adéquat
Pour en composer la mélodie, j'ai demandé à Charles Trenet d'écrire la musique
C'qui fait que ce soir, vous allez entendre une chanson écrite par deux Charles
Ce qui vous prouvera que ce n'est pas comme les clous
Un Charles ne chasse pas l'autre
Et comme je suis un garçon qui a une imagination fertile
J'ai trouvé un titre, mais un titre incontournable pour ma chanson
J'l'ai intitulé Trenetement

Ma page est vierge, je suis devant
Il me faut écrire un roman
Et je gamberge, me tiens le front
En cherchant une inspiration

Si dans une heure, j'ai pu noircir quelques feuillets
Mon éditeur pourra me consentir un prêt
Que ma concierge, guette déjà
Car mon loyer n'est pas payé depuis six mois

Je me concentre, mais rien ne vient
Et je suis mangé par la faim
Car dans mon ventre, au désespoir
Il n'y a pas même un café noir

J'ai beau chercher, comment faire un repas gratuit
Dans le quartier, je n'obtiens plus aucun crédit
Et quand je rentre chez eux, parfois
Les commerçants sont menaçants dès qu'ils me voient

Muse, ma reine, ma tendre amie
Mon doux cœur et mon pur esprit
Mets-moi en veine, je suis à court
Je t'en prie, viens à mon secours

Donne-moi donc trois personnages et un décor
Qui connaîtront la vie, l'amour et puis la mort
Quel ça devienne un best-seller qui m'offre un jour
Et le Goncourt, et l'habit vert

Mon cœur bat vite, ça y est, ça y est je crois
Mon roman s'écrit malgré moi
Quand je cogite, ma plume court
J'en oublie tout ce qui m'entoure

Je suis génial, j'ai fini l'œuvre en une nuit
Le point final est au bas de mon manuscrit
Je sollicite mon éditeur
Qui m'éconduit avec mépris, ah, quel malheur

Depuis, je sombre dans la folie

I must admit it once again
I've always had an unconditional, boundless admiration
For Charles Trenet
And I knew him, well I, I saw him for the first time

To compose the melody, I asked Charles Trenet to write the music

I came up with a title, but an inescapable title for my song
I called it Trenetement
