Mi verso criollo pauteño nació con los nubarrones,
Lo engendraron en agosto los truenos y ventarrones

Fue parido en la llanura igual que los cimarrones,
La musa fue la partera que le dio unos estrujones
Estando recién brota′o lo arrullaron los bordones
Se fue formando en los hatos con el calor de los piones
Y en el corral becerrero dio sus primeros sermones.
Mi verso quedó en el llano rega'o en esos rincones
Por eso vive en la ruana, en la silla, en los arciones
En el nudo el arreviate que apreta con los jalones
En el toro cachibroco y en los novillos topones
Embarrado en la maraña de un chaparral de canciones
Viajó con el cabrestero contándole sus pasiones
Quedó en los brincos morochos de los caballos potrones
Y en la marota curtí′a que llora en los botalones.
El humilde cocinero, mi verso está en los limpiones
En el fogón de tres topias en la brasa en los pilones
En el jodi'o pendenciero bueno por los coscorrones
En la mujer parrandera y en los borrachos llorones,
Mi verso se fortalece en medio de los tropezones
Y como es tan campesino criollito y de condiciones
Entrevero los persogos del maíz en los tambullones

Cuando se prende un parrandón hace sus apariciones,
Mi verso nació varón de correa y de pantalones
Por eso aunque ha sido objeto de un montón de criticones
No se humilla, no doblega, ni lo corren a terrones
Mi verso viaja en el lomo del potro de mis pasiones
Curucutiando el pollero de musas y versaciones
Y aquí está como un pilón soportando machucones
Demostrándole a la gente como se canta y compone.
