At seven this morning I got on the phone
And said to hold my Bronc as long as you can
My car broke down in Billings and they just got it put back together

That cop he hollered after me and said, "Hey, cowboy
You better slow down 'cause you can not run this radar!"

As I rolled on down the road I was a cursin' and a swearin'
About the ticket that I had just acquired
I wondered if I ought to pay it or throw it out the window
But I might just set the damn thing afire

So I gunned it once again and was a traveling down the road
With the gas pedal a mashed to the floor
When I came around a curve and right there in the highway
There was more damn sheep than I ever seen before

I'm going to fast to ever stop, so I just close my eyes
As the car rolls on through the herd
When I opened up my eyes again there's a sheep on the fender
And that herds saying some mighty awful words

The sweats a dripping off my hands as I barrel through old Wheatland
I'm a nervous wreck and I must be a sight
The flies inside this old car are buzzing all around me
Guess my 24-hour deodorant quit last night

60, 50, 40, 30, 20 miles more
The rodeo starts in another eighteen minutes
I pull in through the main gate and I hear the anthem playing
I can't believe it, thank God I finally made it

There's only one more obstacle that standing in my way
It's a nitwit with a weekend badge
He standing by the gate and as I slide her to a halt
He says "Where in the hell you going so dog gone fast?"

I tell him, I'm entered and I ain't got time to talk
My horse is in the chute and I'm late
He says I need to get a pass from the secretary
My eyes get red, my heart fills up with hate

I yell you dirty so and so you better let me through

So I whacked him in the mouth and a left him lying there

I got there just in time to see my Bronc come running out

I looked and what did I see
Three highway patrolmen and a gate man with a fat lip
And they were all a looking right at me

Sitting in the cell now I've done a lot of thinking
About that wild run I made a month ago
I'm sorry that I'm in this rotten situation

Er fuhr hinter mir, Blaulicht angemacht
Das Signal: Sofort an den Rand
Ich trat die Bremse, Schlitterte zum Stehen
Kappte drei Leitpfosten am Straßenrand

Er stieg aus, kam langsam näher
Ich sprang ihm entgegen, halb so wild
Er zückt' die Pistole: "Sind Sie wahnsinnig?
So 'nen Fahrer sah ich nie in meinem Bild!"

Ich sagte: "Ruhig, steck die Waffe weg
Bei Deinem Zittern löst sie sich noch"
Er steckte sie ein, ich erklärte die Lage
Er hörte zu und hustete dann noch

Er schrieb 'nen Strafzettel, schien ewig zu dauern
Ich nahm ihn, ging zu meinem Auto sacht
Der Bulle rief: "He, Cowboy, hör zu
Mach langsam, Radars kannst du nicht besiegen durch Macht!"

Weiterfahrend fluchte ich wütend
Über den Strafzettel, den ich erwarb
Soll ich zahlen? Oder wegwerfen?
Vielleicht das verdammte Ding anzünd' verbrenn?

Also gab ich wieder Gas
Fuhr weiter mit durchgedrücktem Pedal
Kam um die Kurve und mitten auf der Straße
Sah mehr Schafe als jemals zuvor einmal

Zu schnell zum Bremsen, ich schloss die Augen
Als der Wagen durch die Herde rollt
Öffnete sie: Ein Schaf auf der Motorhaube
Der Hirte schimpft mit Worten, die man nicht holt

Schweiß tropft von meinen Händen, durch Wheatland ras' ich
Bin ein Wrack, sicher scheußlich im Licht
Fliegen im Auto surren um mich herum
Mein 24h-Deo versagte wohl in der Nacht

Durchs Haupttor hör' ich die Hymne spielen
Ich glaub's kaum, Gott sei Dank, ich schaffte's!

Nur ein Hindernis blieb noch übrig

Stand am Tor, ich bremste schlitternd
Sprach: "Wohin so verdammt eilig, weißt?"

Ich: "Bin gemeldet, keine Zeit zum Reden
Mein Pferd steht startbereit, ich bin spät"
Er: "Hol 'ne Erlaubnis vom Sekretär erst"
Meine Augen rot, Hass im Blut so spät

Ich schrie: "Du elender ... lass mich durch
Er forderte mich auf, es zu wiederholen
Ich schlug ihm ins Gesicht, er lag am Boden
Auf dem Rücken, strampelnd im Sand, das war mein Dolen

Gerade noch sah ich mein Pferd rauslaufen
Sein Kopf und Schweif stolz erhoben hoch

Drehte mich um, fühlte mich verloren
