You know what they say, the world is made of stairs,
Some people descend, while others climb with cares.
But if you dare to try and ascend,
You'll find those who'll push you back to the end.
On the first step, the desperate reside,
Those dealt the worst hand, with nowhere to hide.
Behind them, the void, the pit of despair,
Smelling faintly of bread for the starving to share.
For one who chooses the scent and illusion,
Another ascends towards redemption's fusion.
Ten, twenty, a hundred have taken their place,
In debt for smoke, with credit for a feast's embrace.
On the second step, the exhausted take breath,
With the little lung power they have left.
They tell no one, fearing exposure's sting,
Condemned as thieves of their own air's swing.
They breathe, but do little more, it's true,
Can't even raise their eyes, their vision askew.
Now and then, someone collapses on their knees,
But it's only for hygiene they're then laid to ease.
And on the third step, the workers stand tall,
Crowding together, so none may fall.
From their grand journey, with its ultimate aim,
The end of oppression, the stairs' collapse and shame.
None want to climb without the other three hundred,
For those who betray, isolation will be thundered.
It'll be a stingy exchange, and after the fight,
A reputation of a cheat, a scab in history's light.
You know what they say, the world is made of stairs,
Some people descend, while others climb with cares.
But if you look closely at those who ascend,
You'll see they possess something you can't transcend.
On the fourth step, the merchants you'll meet,
Shopkeepers, ushers, and reps on the street.
With all their children to push ahead,
Towards positions of greater stead.
They glare at each other with menacing eyes,
To the cries of others, they pay no surprise.
They compete in cunning, in pushing their way,
So much so that daily, some fall into dismay.
And on the fifth step, the clerks take their stand,
Petty bureaucrats, graduates close at hand.
Country priests, cops, and soldiers in line,
Intellectuals devoid of intelligence's shine.
All convinced they're someone, you see,
With or without uniform, and tasks of decree.
All convinced they're worth almost a lot,
That what's been given won't be easily forgot.
And on the sixth step, the titled reside,
Children of the powerful, bastards or cast aside.
Fallen nobles and the disinherited,
Princes, kings, and sultans, dethroned and misled.
They're not so different from those below,
They just have less money and more pride to show.
With one single desire, a step of their own,
As long as it's not earned by plebeian moan.

But if you look closely at those who fall down,
You'll see they are just like you, without a crown.
After the sixth step, they've placed a gate,
A sign reads, "Well done, our idiot mate."
And "Bravo, our fool, you've come this far,
You've made such good use of freedom's bazaar."
After the sixth step, with a hearty laugh,
They open a manhole, give you a harsh draft.
And there you are, stubborn as a mule,
Back at the bottom, kicked in the rear, feeling cruel...
