To my beloved mother

I'm heartbroken because I'm home free while you're the captive one.

They blame me for being outside while you're inside.

Shame on those who don't acknowledge the role of struggling women.

You've carried the cause your entire life.

You were imprisoned while pregnant with me.

My first cry as a child
was a scream, a scream for freedom.

Tender bones, harsh bars.

I am a prisoner, son of a prisoner.

The only child in a women's prison.
I was born in prison while you were still alive, albeit barely.

As a child, your handcuffs were my toys.

You nursed me with awareness, so I grew up conscious.

The greatest joy was when my first tooth came out.

I didn't see my father, but I had more than one mother.
