L'Autostrada

La casa era giusto al confine tra il vento e la sete
Un posto abitato da fate
E da poche altre forme di vita ugualmente concrete
Vicino all'incrocio di un paio di strade sterrate
Che senza motivo apparente si incontrano
E poi, disperate, ripartono
Tristi, così come sono arrivate
Comunque a qualcuno una volta saranno piaciute
Se poi sono state abitate
Qualcuno che fermo all'incrocio pensò:
"Aspettiamo che arrivi l'estate"
L'estate da noi non è mica un periodo felice
Che il caldo ti toglie la pace
La polvere copre ogni cosa
E ti spezza la voce, l'odore di verze marcite
La gente che passa ci guarda e prosegue veloce
Ci osserva e prosegue veloce
Magari saluta, ma sempre prosegue veloce

Se almeno si vedesse l'autostrada
Ci porterebbe senz'altro a una città
Oppure proseguire ovunque vada
Meglio
Meglio che qua

La chiesa era uguale alle case, ma aveva una croce
E forse un po' più di vernice
Ed un'unica luce fornita da fiaccole appese
Imbevute di pece
Fu lì che la vidi a braccetto col prete
Era il 5 di aprile
E tirava una brezza che dava un colore alla quiete
E profumo di pane alle olive
Lei pure mi vide
E forse sorrise
Non sono sicuro, ma forse davvero sorrise
Perché all'improvviso fu molto più forte l'odore del pane alle olive
La gente che passa ci guarda e prosegue veloce
Ci osserva e prosegue veloce
Magari sorride, ma sempre prosegue veloce

Se almeno si vedesse l'autostrada
Ci porterebbe senz'altro a una città
Oppure proseguire ovunque vada
Meglio
Meglio che qua

A volte succede qualcosa di dolce e fatale
Come svegliarsi e trovare la neve
O come quel giorno che lei mi sorrise
Ma senza voltarsi e fuggire
Vederla venirmi vicino fu quasi morire
Trovare per caso il destino
E non sapere che dire
Ma invece fu lei a parlare

"Mi piace guardare la faccia nascosta del sole
Vedere che in fondo si muove
Dormire distesa su un letto di viole" mi disse
E a te cosa piace?

"Mi piace sentire la forza di un'ala che si apre
Volare lontano
Sentirmi rapace, capace di dirti ti amo
Aspettiamola insieme l'estate"

E intanto volevo sparire
Pensando alle cose che avevo da offrire
L'incrocio
La casa
La chiesa
La croce
L'incrocio-la casa-la chiesa-la croce
Ed in più lo spettacolo atroce di tutta
La gente che passa ci guarda e prosegue veloce

The Highway

The house was right on the border between wind and thirst
A place inhabited by fairies
And by few other equally concrete life forms
Near the crossroads of a couple of dirt roads
That meet for no apparent reason
And then, desperate, they depart again
Sad, just as they arrived
But someone must have liked them once
If they were inhabited
Someone who stopped at the crossroads and thought:
"Let's wait for summer to arrive"
Summer is not a happy time for us
The heat takes away your peace
Dust covers everything
And breaks your voice, the smell of rotten cabbages
People passing by look at us and continue quickly
They observe us and continue quickly
They might wave, but they always continue quickly

If only we could see the highway
It would surely take us to a city
Or continue wherever it goes
Better
Better than here

The church was like the houses, but it had a cross
And maybe a little more paint
And a single light provided by hanging torches
Soaked in pitch
It was there that I saw her arm in arm with the priest
It was April 5th
And there was a breeze that gave the stillness a color
And the scent of olive bread
She saw me too
And maybe she smiled
I'm not sure, but maybe she really did smile
Because suddenly the smell of olive bread was much stronger
People passing by look at us and continue quickly
They observe us and continue quickly
They might smile, but they always continue quickly

If only we could see the highway
It would surely take us to a city
Or continue wherever it goes
Better
Better than here

Sometimes something sweet and fatal happens
Like waking up and finding snow
Or like the day she smiled at me
But without turning and running away
Seeing her come close to me was almost like dying
Finding destiny by chance
And not knowing what to say
But instead it was her who spoke

"I like to look at the hidden face of the sun
To see that it moves deep down
To sleep lying on a bed of violets" she said to me
And what do you like?

"I like to feel the strength of a wing opening
To fly far away
To feel like a bird of prey, capable of telling you I love you
Let's wait for summer together"

And meanwhile I wanted to disappear
Thinking about the things I had to offer
The crossroads
The house
The church
The cross

And in addition the atrocious spectacle of all
The people passing by looking at us and continuing quickly
