De tous les animaux qui s′élèvent dans l'air
Qui marchent sur la terre ou nagent dans la mer
De Paris au Pérou du Japon jusqu′à Rome
Le plus sot des animaux à mon avis c'est l'homme

Voilà l′homme en fait il va du blanc au noir
Il dénigre au matin ses sentiments du soir
Si pénible aux autres, en soi-même incommode
Il change d′attitude comme il change de mode

Est-ce qu'on a déjà vu dans les plaines d′Afrique
Saccager ça jusqu'au bout leur propre république
Lions contre lions éléphant contre éléphant
Se combattre jusqu′aux os pour le solde d'un tyran

Calme-toi me diras-tu, ça ne sert à rien de s′exciter
L'homme a toutes ces vertus dont on oserait douter
Comme la mer il fait ces flots et il fait ces caprices
Mais ces moindres défauts occultent mal ces vices

Qui voudrait nous prouver par son discours profane
Que l'homme est merveilleux et mérite mieux qu′un âne
Un âne peut dire tout haut ce qu′il pense tout bas
Mais entre nous dis, docteur, que ne dirait-il pas

The most foolish of animals in my opinion is Man

Here is Man in fact he goes from white to black
He denigrates in the morning his feelings of the evening
So painful to others, in himself uncomfortable
He changes his attitude as he changes his fashion

Has it ever been seen on the plains of Africa
To devastate to the end their own republic
Lions against lions elephants against elephants
Fighting to the bone for the balance of a tyrant

Calm down you will tell me, there is no use in getting excited
Man has all these virtues that we would dare to doubt
Like the sea he makes his waves and he makes his caprices
But these minor defects badly hide these vices

Who would want to prove to us by his profane discourse
That Man is marvelous and deserves better than an ass
An ass can say aloud what he thinks in his heart
But between us tell me, doctor, what wouldn′t he say?
