अथ पुरुषसूक्तम्
Now, the Purusha Suktam.
तच्छं॒ योरावृ॑णीमहे गा॒तुं य॒ज्ञाय॑
Om. That glory let us choose, for song, for sacrifice,
गा॒तुं य॒ज्ञप॑तये दैवी᳚ स्व॒स्तिर॑स्तु नः
for song, for the lord of sacrifice. Divine well-being be to us.
स्व॒स्तिर्मानु॑षेभ्यः ऊ॒र्ध्वं जि॑गातु भेष॒जम्
Well-being to humans. Upwards may the medicine ascend.
शन्नो॑ अस्तु द्वि॒पदे᳚ शं चतु॑ष्पदे
Peace be to the two-footed, peace to the four-footed.
शान्तिः॒ शान्तिः॒ शान्तिः॑
Om peace, peace, peace.
हरिः स॒हस्र॑शीर्षा॒ पुरु॑षः
Harih Om. Om. Thousand-headed is Purusha,
स॒ह॒स्रा॒क्षः स॒हस्र॑पात् भूमिं॑
Thousand-eyed, thousand-footed. He having encompassed the earth on all sides,
वि॒श्वतो॑ वृ॒त्वा अत्य॑तिष्ठद्दशाङ्गु॒लम् ।१
Exceeded it by ten fingers. 1
पुरु॑ष ए॒वेदꣳ सर्वम्᳚ यद्भू॒तं यच्च॒ भव्यम्᳚। उ॒तामृ॑त॒त्वस्येशा॑नः
Purusha alone is all this, whatever has been and whatever shall be. He is also the lord of immortality,
यदन्ने॑नाति॒रोह॑ति ।२ ए॒तावा॑नस्य महि॒मा अतो॒ ज्यायाꣳ॑श्च॒
Which he grows beyond by food. 2 This is his greatness. And Purusha is greater than this.
पूरु॑षः पादो᳚ऽस्य॒ विश्वा॑ भू॒तानि॑ त्रि॒पाद॑स्या॒मृतं॑ दि॒वि ।३
All beings are his foot. His three-quarters are the immortal in heaven. 3
त्रि॒पादू॒र्ध्व उदै॒त्पुरु॑षः पादो᳚ऽस्ये॒हाऽऽभ॑वा॒त्पुनः॑ ततो॒
Three-quarters of Purusha ascended upwards. His one-quarter came to be here again. From that,
विश्व॒ङ्व्य॑क्रामत् सा॒श॒ना॒न॒श॒ने अ॒भि ।४ तस्मा᳚द्वि॒राड॑जायत
He pervaded all, both what eats and what does not eat. 4
वि॒राजो॒ अधि॒ पूरु॑षः जा॒तो
From him Viraj was born. From Viraj, Purusha arose. He, being born,
अत्य॑रिच्यत प॒श्चाद्भूमि॒मथो॑ पु॒रः ।५
Extended beyond the earth, behind and in front. 5
यत्पुरु॑षेण ह॒विषा᳚ दे॒वा य॒ज्ञमत॑न्वत व॒स॒न्तो अ॑स्यासी॒दाज्यम्᳚
When the gods performed sacrifice with Purusha as the offering, Spring was the ghee thereof,
ग्री॒ष्म इ॒ध्मः श॒रद्ध॒विः ।६ स॒प्तास्या॑सन्परि॒धयः॑ त्रिः स॒प्त
Summer the fuel, Autumn the oblation. 6 Seven were his enclosing sticks. Three times seven
स॒मिधः॑ कृ॒ताः दे॒वा यद्य॒ज्ञं
Were the fuel-sticks made. The gods, performing sacrifice,
त॑न्वा॒नाः अब॑ध्न॒न्पु॑रुषं प॒शुम् ।७
Bound Purusha as the victim. 7
तं य॒ज्ञं ब॒र्हिषि॒ प्रौक्षन्॑ पुरु॑षं जा॒तम॑ग्र॒तः तेन॑ दे॒वा
They sprinkled that sacrifice with clarified butter. Purusha, being born in the beginning. With him the gods
अय॑जन्त सा॒ध्या ऋष॑यश्च॒ ये ।८ तस्मा᳚द्य॒ज्ञात्स॑र्व॒हुतः॑
Sacrificed, the Sadhyas, the Rishis, and they. 8 From that sacrifice completely offered,
संभृ॑तं पृषदा॒ज्यम् प॒शूꣳस्ताꣳश्च॑क्रे वाय॒व्यान्॑

आ॒र॒ण्यान्ग्रा॒म्याश्च॒ ये ।९ तस्मा᳚द्य॒ज्ञात्स॑र्व॒हुतः॑ ऋचः॒

सामा॑नि जज्ञिरे छन्दाꣳ॑सि जज्ञिरे॒ तस्मा᳚त् यजु॒स्तस्मा॑दजायत
And the Samans were born. The meters were born from that. From that the Yajus was born.
१० तस्मा॒दश्वा॑ अजायन्त ये के चो॑भ॒याद॑तः गावो॑ जज्ञिरे॒
10 From that horses were born, and all those that have two rows of teeth. Cows also were born from that.
तस्मा᳚त् तस्मा᳚ज्जा॒ता अ॑जा॒वयः॑ ११ यत्पुरु॑षं॒ व्य॑दधुः
From that goats and sheep were born. 11 When they divided Purusha,
क॒ति॒धा व्य॑कल्पयन् मुखं॒ किम॑स्य॒
Into how many parts did they arrange him? What is his mouth called? What are his two arms?
कौ बा॒हू कावू॒रू पादा॑वुच्येते १२
What are his thighs and feet called? 12
ब्रा॒ह्म॒णो᳚ऽस्य॒ मुख॑मासीत् बा॒हू रा॑ज॒न्यः॑ कृ॒तः ऊ॒रू तद॑स्य॒
The Brahman was his mouth. The Rajanya was made his two arms. His thighs were what the Vaisya is.
यद्वैश्यः॑ प॒द्भ्याꣳ शू॒द्रो अ॑जायत १३ च॒न्द्रमा॒ मन॑सो जा॒तः
From his feet the Sudra was born. 13 The moon was born from his mind.
चक्षोः॒ सूर्यो॑ अजायत
From his eye the sun was born.
मुखा॒दिन्द्र॑श्चा॒ग्निश्च॑ प्रा॒णाद्वा॒युर॑जायत १४
From his mouth Indra and Agni. From his breath the wind was born. 14
नाभ्या॑ आसीद॒न्तरि॑क्षम् शी॒र्ष्णो द्यौः सम॑वर्तत
From his navel was the mid-air. From his head the heaven came into being.
प॒द्भ्यां भूमि॒र्दिशः॒ श्रोत्रा᳚त् तथा॑ लो॒काꣳ अ॑कल्पयन् १५
From his feet the earth, from his ear the quarters. Thus they arranged the worlds. 15
वेदा॒हमे॒तं पुरु॑षं म॒हान्तम्᳚ आ॒दि॒त्यव॑र्णं॒ तम॑सस्तु॒ पा॒रे
I know this great Purusha, of sun-like colour, beyond darkness.
सर्वा॑णि रू॒पाणि॑ वि॒चित्य॒ धीरः॑
Having arranged all forms, the wise one,
नामा॑नि कृ॒त्वाऽभि॒वद॒न् यदास्ते᳚ १६
Having made the names, speaks what exists. 16
धा॒ता पु॒रस्ता॒द्यमु॑दाज॒हार॑ श॒क्रः प्रवि॒द्वान्प्र॒दिश॒श्चत॑स्रः
The Ordainer in the beginning brought him forth. The knowing Indra pervaded the four quarters.
तमे॒वं वि॒द्वान॒मृत॑ इ॒ह भ॑वति नान्यः पन्था॒ अय॑नाय विद्यते १७
He who knows him thus, here becomes immortal. There is no other path for going to the other world. 17
य॒ज्ञेन॑ य॒ज्ञम॑यजन्त दे॒वाः तानि॒ धर्मा॑णि प्रथ॒मान्या॑सन् ते
With sacrifice the gods sacrificed to sacrifice. These were the first ordinances. These
ह॒ नाकं॑ महि॒मानः॑ सचन्ते यत्र॒
Greatnesses reach to the highest heaven, where
पूर्वे॑ सा॒ध्याः सन्ति॑ दे॒वाः १८
The ancient Sadhyas, the gods, are. 18
