Die Stadt lag am Meer,
Hatte lange bestanden und war
Festgemauert
Doch sie war überall zu voll und zu laut
Und hatte sich irgendwie überdauert
Die Bewohner der Stadt packten hastig im Dunkeln die Koffer
Und als sie gingen
Nahmen sie die Kinder bei der Hand
Und im Halbschlaf hörte ich sie singen,
Sie sangen:

Die Menschen waren fort über Nacht
Und ließen die Stadt verfallen zurück,
Die Gebäude sind jetzt Vogelhäuser,
Und auf den ersten Blick
Sieht man Leerstand und dunkle Fensterhöhlen
Doch dahinter nisten die Schwalben
Und Amseln singen wie die Kinder sangen
Und dann such ich sie überall,
Denn sie singen:

Warum hatte mich keiner geweckt?
Und auch du, mein Liebster, bist fort.
Ich male mir aus:
Du bist an einem sonnigen Ort,
Da riechts nach frisch gemähter Wiese
Und ein bisschen nach Waldmeister stell ich mir vor,
Es geht eine leichte Brise

Heute saß eine Kakerlake auf meinem Bett,
Sie hat sich sehr sehr schnell bewegt,
Wir sind alleine in dieser Stadt,
In der sich sonst nichts regt.
Ich sehe goldene Zeiten,
Blicke ich zurück,

Es ist alles nur Täuschung,
Goldene Täuschung und giftiger Staub,

City by the Sea

The city lay by the sea,
Had long existed and was
Fortified
But it was too full and too loud everywhere
