Ümmü Zer

A house like a poem,
The happiest home on Earth,
Our Prophet and Mother Aisha,
Mother tells the stories of 11 women,
Stories of 11 Yemeni women,
These women gather to share their husbands' conditions,
But first, they make a solemn promise,
To conceal nothing.

And the first woman begins,
My husband is like a weak camel on top of a steep mountain,
It's not easy to climb, nor fat enough to carry a load,
He's a harsh, grumpy, and proud man.

The second woman narrates,
I'm afraid to speak of my husband's bad qualities,
If I start talking,
I'd have to tell everything, big and small, leaving nothing out,
That's not easy, time wouldn't suffice.

It's the third woman's turn,
She also criticizes her husband,
My husband is tall, but his mind is short,
If I speak, I'll get divorced,
If I remain silent, I'll be left hanging.

The fourth woman praises her husband,
My husband is like the Tihama night,
Neither hot nor cold,
Neither frightening nor tiresome.

The fifth woman speaks,
My husband is like a leopard when he enters the house,
And a lion when he goes out,
He doesn't question the housework I leave behind.

The sixth woman shares,
My husband eats seven meals one after another,
He consumes all my food and drinks,
He thinks of nothing but eating and drinking.

The seventh woman sighs,
My husband's only job is to beat me, she says,
He injures my head and body,
He uses anything he can get his hands on to do it.

The eighth woman compares her husband to a rabbit,
And describes him in one sentence,
He smells sweet like a fragrant herb.

The ninth woman tells,
My husband is tall and well-built, his home is comfortable,
His hearth has plenty of ashes,
He is a man like a council,
He is hospitable.

The tenth woman narrates,
My husband is wealthy,
He possesses every good thing you can imagine,
He has many camels,
They are kept ready for slaughter.

And it's the eleventh woman's turn to speak,
It's Ümmü Zer's turn,
The wife of Abu Zer, but not Abu Zer Rifari,
The word is with Ümmü Zer.

My husband is called Abu Zer, but what an Abu Zer!

Abu Zer found me at the edge of a mountain called Ship,
The daughter of a family who lived off a few sheep,
He adorned my ears with jewelry,
He made me happy,
I felt fortunate and elevated,
He brought me to a prosperous and happy society,
Where horses neighed and camels roared,
Where crops were sown and grains were harvested,
I had a voice with him,
I was never scolded,
I would sleep soundly from evening till morning,
I would drink milk to my heart's content.

One day, Abu Zer left the house,
Everywhere, milk skins were being churned to extract butter,
He met a woman on the road,
My husband must have loved this woman and left me,
He married her,
After that, I married another man,
He was a good man,
This husband would tell me, "Oh Ümmü Zer, eat, drink, and be generous to your relatives",
Even if I gathered everything this second husband gave me,
It wouldn't fill the smallest of Abu Zer's vessels.

The stories of the 11 Yemeni women had ended,
The Prophet looked at Mother Aisha with a smile,
Oh Aisha,
I am to you like Abu Zer was to Ümmü Zer,
The only difference is that Abu Zer divorced Ümmü Zer,
I will not divorce you,
We will live together.

Mother Aisha said, "Oh Messenger of Allah,
How do you love me?"
The Prophet replied, again with a smile,
Oh Aisha,
Like the first day, like a tight knot.

A house like a poem,
The happiest home on Earth,
The stories of 11 Yemeni women,
Our Prophet and Mother Aisha,
With a smile on her face and peace in her heart,
The lady of the house is happy,
The honorable mother of the believers.
