Der Grüne Esel

Miran, ein kluger Narr
Färbt einen Esel grün.
Am Leibe grün, rot an den Beinen.
Fängt an mit ihm die Gassen zu durchziehn ',
Er zeiht und jung und alt erscheinen.
Welch Wunder!
Rief die ganze Stadt,
Ein Esel zeigt sich grün der rote Füße hat.
Das muss die Chronik einst den Enkeln noch erzähl 'n,
Was es zu unsrer Zeit für Wunderdinge gab.
Die Gassen wimmelten von Millionen Seelen.
Man hebt die Fenster aus, man deckt die Dächer ab.
Denn alles will den grünen Esel sehen,
Und alle konnten doch nicht mit dem Esel gehen.
Man lief die beiden ersten Tage
Dem Esel mit Bewunderung nach.
Der Kranke selbst vergaß der Krankheitsplage
Wenn man vom Esel sprach.
Die Kinder in Schlaf zu bringen
Sang keine Mutter mehr vom schwarzen Schaf.
Vom grünen Esel hört man singen
Und so gerät das Kind in Schlaf.
Drei Tage waren kaum vergangen,
So war es um den Wert des armen Tier's geschehn.
Das Volk bezeigte kein Verlangen
Den grünen Esel mehr zu sehen.
Und so bewundernswert es Anfangs allen schien,
So dacht ' doch kein Mensch mehr einen Klacks an ihn.

The Green Donkey

Miran, a wise fool
Paints a donkey green.
Green of body, red of legs.
Begins to parade him through the streets,
