One fine day, we will see
A wisp of smoke arise
On the far horizon of the sea,
And then the ship will appear.
Then the white ship
Enters the port, its salute thundering!
Do you see?! He has come!
I won't go down to meet him, no!
I'll stand on the crest of the hill and wait,
And wait a long time, and the long wait will not be hard for me.
And from out of the crowd in the town,
A man, a tiny dot
Starts up the hill.
Who will it be, who will it be?
And when he has arrived,
What will he say, what will he say?
He will call "Butterfly" from afar.
I will make no answer
But will hide myself,
Partly for fun... and partly to keep from dying
At our first meeting, and he, somewhat worried
Will call, will call:
"Little wife,
Fragrance of verbena!"
The names he gave me on his arrival.
