Lungo una strada di sassi e di polvere
Molto battuta dal sole e dal vento,
Quell'uomo tornava contento nel mondo,
Dal fango di grigie trincee.
Lasciava alle spalle il fucile e il mortaio,
Cercava di scorgere il vecchio granaio.
La curva in leggera discesa
E nel fondo la chiesa, sospesa laggiù.
La gente stentava a capire chi fosse,
Ma lui dentro ai colpi di tosse
Parlava con gli occhi e diceva così:
'Amore, amore ritorno da te,
Oggi o domani io vengo da te.
Lunga è la notte passata lontano da te'.
Lungo una strada col primo cemento
Solcata da carri col cambio al volante,
Quell'uomo partiva con passo esitante;
Cercava lavoro in città.
Lasciava alle spalle il sacrista e il fornaio,
Bandiere e uniformi piegate in solaio,
Saliva l'antica discesa
E lasciava la chiesa, sospesa laggiù.
Pochissimi andarono a dirgli 'buon viaggio',
Ma lui con tremante coraggio
Lasciava un biglietto con scritto così:

Oggi o domani io vengo da te.
Lunga è la notte passata lontano da te'.
Ma quando la notte lo prende alla gola,
Rivede nel buio il cortile e la scuola,

The Night Is Long

Along a road of rocks and dust
Much beaten by the sun and the wind,
That man was happily returning to the world,
From the mud of gray trenches.
He was leaving behind the rifle and the mortar,
He was trying to glimpse the old barn.
The curve in a slight descent
And in the background the church, suspended down there.
People had trouble understanding who he was,
But between coughing fits
He spoke with his eyes and said:

Along a road with the first concrete
Furrowed by wagons with gears on the steering wheel,
That man was leaving with a hesitant step;
He was looking for work in the city.

And was leaving the church, suspended down there.
Very few people went to say 'farewell' to him,
