Escucha, hijo: voy a decirte esto mientras duermes, una manecita metida bajo la mejilla y los rubios rizos pegados a tu frente humedecida.
He entrado solo a tu cuarto.
Hace unos minutos, mientras leía mi diario en la biblioteca, sentí una ola de remordimiento que me ahogaba.
Culpable, vine junto a tu cama.
Esto es lo que pensaba, hijo: me enojé contigo.
Te regañé cuando te vestías para ir a la escuela, porque apenas te mojaste la cara con la toalla.
Te regañé porque no te limpiaste los zapatos.
Te grité porque dejaste caer algo al suelo.
Durante el desayuno te regañé también.
Volcaste las cosas.
Tragaste la comida sin cuidado.
Pusiste los codos sobre la mesa.
Untaste demasiado el pan con mantequilla.
Y cuando te ibas a jugar y yo salía a tomar el tren, te volviste y me saludaste con la mano y dijiste: "¡Adiós, papa!" y yo fruncí el entrecejo y te respondí: "¡Ten erguidos los hombros!"
Al caer la tarde todo empezó de nuevo.
Al acercarme a casa te vi, de rodillas, jugando en la calle.
Tenías agujeros en las medias.
Te humillé ante tus amigos al hacerte marchar a casa delante de mí.
Las medias son caras, y si tuvieras que comprarlas tú, serías más cuidadoso.
Pensar, hijo, que un padre diga eso.
¿Recuerdas, más tarde, cuando yo leía en la biblioteca, y entraste tímidamente con una mirada de perseguido?
Cuando levante la vista del diario, impaciente por la interrupción, vacilaste en la puerta. "¿Qué quieres ahora?" Te dije bruscamente.
Nada respondiste, pero te lanzaste en tempestuosa carrera y me echaste los brazos al cuello y me besaste, y tus bracitos me apretaron con un cariño que Dios había hecho florecer en tu corazón y que ni aún el descuido ajeno puede agostar.
Y luego te fuiste a dormir, con breves pasitos ruidosos por la escalera.
Bien, hijo; poco después fue cuando se me cayó el diario de las manos y entró en mi un terrible temor. ¿Qué estaba haciendo de mi la costumbre?
La costumbre de encontrar defectos, de reprender; ésta era mi recompensa a ti por ser un niño.
No era que yo no te amara; era que esperaba demasiado de ti.
Y medía según la vara de mis años maduros.
Y hay tanto de bueno y de bello y de recto en tu carácter.
Ese corazoncito tuyo es grande como el sol que nace entre las colinas.
Así lo demostraste con tu espontáneo impulso de correr a besarme esta noche.
Nada más que eso importa esta noche, hijo.
He llegado a tu camita en la oscuridad, y me he arrodillado, lleno de vergüenza.
Es una pobre explicación; se que no comprenderías estas cosas si te las dijera cuando estás despierto pero mañana seré un verdadero papá.
Seré tu compañero, y sufriré cuando sufras, y reiré cuando rías.
Me morderé la lengua cuando esté por pronunciar palabras impacientes.
No haré más que decirme, como si fuera un ritual: "
No es más que un niño, un niño pequeñito".
Temo haberte imaginado hombre.
Pero al verte ahora, hijo, acurrucado, fatigado en tu camita, veo que eres un bebé todavía.

The World of the Child

Listen, my love: I'm going to tell you this while you sleep, one little hand tucked under your cheek and the blonde curls matted on your damp forehead.
I've come into your room alone.
Just a few minutes ago, as I was reading my paper in the library, a stifling wave of remorse swept over me.
Guilty, I came to your bedside.
This is what I was thinking, darling: I was cross with you.
I scolded you as you were dressing for school because you gave your face merely a dab with a towel.
I took you to task for not cleaning your shoes.
I called out angrily when you threw some of your things on the floor.
At breakfast I found fault, too.
You spilled things.
You gulped down your food.
You put your elbows on the table.
You spread butter too thick on your bread.
And as you started off to play and I made for the train, you turned and waved a hand and called, "Goodbye, Daddy!" and I frowned, and said in reply, "Hold your shoulders back!"
Then it began all over again in the late afternoon.
As I came up the road I saw you, down on your knees, playing marbles.
There were holes in your stockings.
I humiliated you before your boyfriends by marching you ahead of me to the house.
Stockings are expensive, and if you had to buy them you would be more careful!
Imagine that, darling, from a father!
Do you remember, later, when I was reading in the library, how you came in timidly, with a sort of hurt look in your eyes?
When I glanced up over my paper, impatient at the interruption, you hesitated at the door. "What is it you want?" I snapped.
You said nothing, but ran across in one tempestuous plunge, and threw your arms around my neck and kissed me, and your small arms tightened with an affection that God had set blooming in your heart and which even neglect could not wither.
And then you were gone, pattering up the stairs.
Well, darling, it was shortly afterwards that my paper slipped from my hands and a terrible sickening fear came over me.
What has habit been doing to me?
The habit of finding fault, of reprimanding - this was my reward to you for being a boy.
It was not that I did not love you; it was that I expected too much of youth.
I was measuring you by the yardstick of my own years.
And there was so much that was good and fine and true in your character.
The little heart of you was as big as the dawn itself over the wide hills.
This was shown by your spontaneous impulse to rush in and kiss me good night.
Nothing else matters tonight, darling.
I have come to your bedside in the darkness, and I have knelt there, ashamed!
It is a feeble atonement; I know you would not understand these things if I told them to you during your waking hours. But tomorrow I will be a real daddy!
I will chum with you, and suffer when you suffer, and laugh when you laugh.
I will bite my tongue when impatient words come.
I will keep saying as if it were a ritual: "He is nothing but a boy - a little boy."
I am afraid I have visualized you as a man.
Yet as I see you now, son, crumpled and weary in your cot, I see that you are still a baby.
Yesterday you were in your mother's arms, your head on her shoulder.
I have asked too much, too much.
