A Mi Cerrada

Llegué cuando todo era un campo sin fin
Y la cerrada limitaba el jardín
De mi casa como una extensión
De concreto que marcaba un camino
Hacia el mundo.
Y cuando o paraba de lloviznar
Mi bicicleta junto a las de otros mas
Me llevaba y sacaba del lodo
Y la calle era todo un océano
Que había que cruzar.

Cuando la calle se llenó de muchachos
Y los terrenos de casas y cuartos
Con gente decente
Pero indiferente a la mía
Pensaba que un día volvería a ser igual.
Y es que pasó a ser zona residencial
Con autos nuevos y calles de asfalto
Y a mí me daba nostalgia
Mirar mi cerrada
Tan quieta y callada
Que ahora era lugar de reunión
De un montón de chicos engreídos
Que hablaban de un mundo
Tan desconocido por mí
Que sentí que debía ser así.

Tuve una novia en un verano de sol
Me incorporé con la civilización
Al amor y a otros simples momentos
Que cubren el tiempo del chico mayor,
Recuerdo cuando volvía de trabajar
Mi casa era una luz en la obscuridad
Y a mi cerrada una calle privada
Donde podía hundirme en la noche al llegar.

Y entonces me vinieron a buscar
La calle, la noche y lo que hay detrás
Bajo este cielo tan triste
Que siempre se viste de gris al clarear
Y me habitué al ronroneo vagabundo
Del tráfico aéreo, a ese rumor callejero
De los autos que exhaustos discurren
Y nunca descansan.

La ciudad es una obscura calle eterna
Plagada de extraños que pasan de largo
Es la estación cerrada de un metro
Que no va a ningún lado,
Es un lugar solitario.

Por eso a veces pienso en escapar
Pero a mi casa la rodeó la ciudad
Y a mí me ató para siempre
A sus calles de luz mortecina
Que anda en las esquinas.

Hace algún tiempo a mi vuelta
Veía a mi cerrada vieja, reservada y tranquila
Pero hoy que la he visto bien, no hallé
Mas que un callejón sin salida,

To My Dead End

I arrived when everything was an endless field
And the cul-de-sac bordered the garden
Of my house like an extension
Of concrete that marked a path
To the world.
And when it stopped drizzling
My bike along with the others
Carried me away and out of the mud
And the street was a whole ocean
That had to be crossed.

When the street filled up with boys
And the plots of land with houses and rooms
With decent people
But indifferent to mine
I thought that one day it would be the same again.
And it came to be a residential area
With new cars and asphalt streets
And it made me nostalgic
To look at my cul-de-sac
So still and quiet
That now it was a meeting place
For a bunch of spoiled kids
Who talked about a world
So unknown to me
That I felt it should be that way.

I had a girlfriend in a summer of sunshine
I joined the civilization
Of love and other simple moments
That fill up the time of the older boy,
I remember when I would come back from work
My house was a light in the darkness
And my cul-de-sac a private street
Where I could sink into the night upon arriving.

And then they came for me
The street, the night, and what's behind
Under this sky so sad
That always dresses in gray at dawn
And I got used to the wandering hum
Of air traffic, to that street noise
Of cars that exhaustingly go by
And never rest.

The city is a dark, eternal street
Full of strangers who pass by
It's a closed metro station
That doesn't go anywhere,
It's a lonely place.

That's why sometimes I think of escaping
But the city has surrounded my house
And it has tied me forever
To its streets of dim light
That hangs around on the corners.

Some time ago when I returned
I saw my old cul-de-sac, reserved and quiet
But today when I've seen it well, I found
Nothing more than a dead-end alley,
A dead-end alley.
