Al fin de esta cantaleta
Brincoteó hasta mi lugar,
Se dio una hábil marometa
Y me invitó a participar.

-Ande, anímese.-Me dijo-
¿Qué tiene usted que agregar?
A lo que yo respondí:
-Nada hombre nada ¡qué va!

Siga usted, cuéntelo todo,
Diga lo que quiera y más;
Yo esperaré mi momento,
Ya le atraparé algún cuento
Y entonces sí que me oirá.

-Pamplinas- Dijo-
Futesas, amenazas nada más.
Y siguió hablando patrañas.

Yo aguardaba silencioso
Maquinando un tenebroso
Maquinando un tenebroso
Plan astuto y arriesgado.
Obstinado y peligroso
Con heroísmo suicida
Juré desenmascararle
Aunque perdiera la vida.

Él, en tanto, se expresaba
Como gran conversador.
Y le oí lo que esperaba,
De las mentiras la peor.

Que fue invitado una mañana
De un gran investigador,
Y que era financiadora
La agrupación cortesana.

Que asistió al experimento
En el que habían descubierto
Pues que la tierra era plana
Y que era todo de momento.

Pero yo escuchaba atento
Y dominando otras teorías
Taché de supercherías
Sus embustes y sus cuentos
Y le interrumpí:

-Momento caballero, son habladas;
He aquí una persona culta
A la que mantienen callada
Por el uso de la fuerza.
Pero anuncio que esta farsa
Voy a desacreditar.

Yo levantaré el suspenso
De mi velo de silencio,
Y que brille la verdad
Como una espada vengadora
Que en mano conocedora
Siempre infunde claridad.

Sepan hoy pues, los amantes
De la ciencia y la cultura,
Que en un pliegue de mi capa
Y donde faltan seis costuras,
Guardo escondido un real mapa
De la Tierra y sus contornos.

De los viajes y retornos
De intrépidos navegantes
Que aportan interesantes
Descubrimientos por mar, y,
Que ante tanta concurrencia
Valdría la pena aclarar.

El plano que ven ustedes
Tiene una forma indicada de mirarse
Y a la que ha llamado el rey
La Cartografía Explicada.

Y, éste es el modo correcto
De estudiar cartografía:
El sur, debe estar abajo,
El norte... creo que es arriba,
Y el oriente y el poniente
A su extremo cada cual.

Y el mundo debe observarse
Conforme a la nueva ley,
Porque así lo manda el rey,
Desde un plano vertical.

Y, una vez puestos de acuerdo
En estos simples pormenores,
Vamos al grano señores
Y aclaremos este enredo.

La teoría de que la Tierra
Es plana fue considerada
Llamémosle obscurantista,
Hoy, vetusta y retrasada.

Y, observen mi mapa atentos.
Antes, no me digan nada.
Notan ustedes lo mismo
Que tengo ante la mirada...
Pues, que la Tierra es cuadrada
Y es todo cuanto sabemos.

Se oyeron gritos de miedo
Y risas de incredulidad,
Porque a veces la verdad
Aturde y causa revuelo
Si se expone así sin nada.

Pero ahí había una mirada
Que observaba con recelo
La veracidad reciente y
Contundente de mi plano.

Que ondeaba como señal,
En esa tarde de verano
En que se acercó e profano
Conde Bruno del Breñal.

Y me dijo: -así que tiene
Un mapa mundi en su poder,
Le exijo que me deje ver
Si es un plano autorizado,
Que hoy en día y por todos lados
Graban lo que más conviene.

Yo le dije: - aquí lo tiene caballero,
échele un ojo,
Y no me permita el enojo
De tener pues que guardarle
Antes de que se convenza.
Conque acérquese a mirarle
Y dígame ¿qué es lo que piensa?

Se me acercó sin tardanza
Y se colocó a mi lado,
Lo miró con desconfianza
Y dijo algo perturbado.

-Pues tiene el nombre del rey,
Y de muchos concejales,
Y creo que también usted
Tiene quince emblemas reales.

¿Quién es usted? -Me indagó-,
Nada tengo que decirle- Respondí-,
Esa pregunta debió hacerla
Antes de irse de la boca,
Sí señor, a tal extremo
Que en vez de participante del saber,
Parece el dueño.

Lo miré frunciendo el ceño
E iba sobre él sin tardanza,
Más se atravesó un pequeño
Que interrumpió mi venganza.

Siempre he respondido atento
Las preguntas de los niños,
Así que voltee a mirarle
Y le pregunté:

-¿Qué te pasa hijo?, di
¿Qué te tiene intrigado?
A lo que el rapaz me dijo
Con sus escasos siete años.

-Óigame, pues yo no creo
Vivir en un mundo acostado,
Porque entonces si así fuera
No podría escupir parado.

Ni tendría yo la mollera
Para arriba y el tamaño
No sería cuestión de altura,
Sino de gordura y de ancho.

Ah, y no me vuelva a decir hijo,
Tendría yo que estar tarado.
Y corrió con sus papás,
A donde ya no le vi más.

Yo le escuchaba paciente
E iba a contestarle cuando
Vine de pronto a acordarme
Que eso no lo había pensado.

Y muchos menos preguntado al rey
En el momento cuando
Me entregara la teoría
De La Cartografía Cuadrada.

Nadie le criticó nada
Ni dijo "esta boca es mía".
De modo que estaba a punto
De brillar por mi insapiencia,
Cuando entre la concurrencia
Surgió una voz conocida,
Y era la del conde Bruno
Que iluminado decía:

-Su teoría es muy acertada
Y aún si la Tierra es cuadrada,
¡Diablos! no tiene por eso
Que perder su cara plana.
A esto le llamo progreso.

Y acostó e mapa en el suelo
Y dijo que las dos teorías
Se unían ambas, y explicábanse
Notable mejoría.

Y vino a preguntar de nuevo...
-¿o no es así compañero?
-Bueno, supongo que sí.-Corroboré-,
Este... más o menos.

Y entonces lo que me dijo
Me acabó de convencer.
-No me venga con modestias,
-Exclamó-.No se haga el tonto,
No olvide las consecuencias
De antiguas interrupciones.

Caballeros, venga venga
Un fuerte aplauso cariñoso
A este gran hombre de ciencia,
Que domina planisferios
Y cartografías modernas.

Y entonces, y ante ese aplauso
Yo también me presenté,
Y así finiquita el cuento:
