Ya hace tiempo que asistí disfrazado
A unas mascaradas que fui invitado
Modelé antifaces tan coloridos

Para verme tal como los demás

Para verme como querían mirarme

En esos desfiles de carnaval

Girando un día la encontré
Bella como media luna
Que alumbra al oscurecer
Convidé a la danza
A la dama luna del antifaz
Que ella usaba para
Que se pensara, que era su faz
Pero al descubrir su semblante
Nada hallé detrás

Me asusté al mirar su cara vacía
Dijo así son todos, ¿no lo sabías?
Con un gesto dulce mas que elegante
Mi luz nocturna se hizo menguante
Luna que al fin desapareció
Al amanecer de mi comprensión

Fui a buscar a aquel que he llamado amigo
Bajo el antifaz nadie hallé conmigo

Parade of Masks

I was once disguised and attended
Some masquerades to which I was invited
I modeled colorful masks
Like the hues of the dresses
That I wore daily as a disguise
To see myself as others did

To see myself as they wanted to see me
I adorned my figure with any display
As the floral man was gallant
I adorned my branches very naturally
To those who saw me I seemed normal
In those carnival parades

Among the couples that went
One day I found her turning
Beautiful like a half moon
That shines at dusk
I invited her to dance
To the masked moon lady
That she wore so
That it was thought to be her face
But when I discovered her countenance
I found nothing behind it

I was frightened when I looked at her empty face
She said that's how they all are, didn't you know?
With a gesture sweet but more elegant
My night light waned
Moon that finally disappeared
At the dawn of my understanding

I went looking for the one I called a friend
Under the mask I found no one with me
I searched among the poses, the comedians
Among the skilled and beginners
Who act to the dreamer's face
And that face was only mine

From then on
I daily shed the mask
That custom made
Of such a stubborn make-up
As a song unmasked
I show myself to you
Who may not like what
He sees when he sees me
Or may even be uncomfortable if he sees no one
Within him

Now I no longer go unmasking
When I find that someone
Is acting out in disguise
When they deceive in their happiness
I only see imitations of humanity
What they could have been and are not
